Jules was afraid of QT's char, he definitely went Beta in that kitchen....makes me wonder what badass shite QT's char did that caused Jules some concern because normally Jules would kill someone for talking to him like that.
I disagree. Jules is the brains of the pair and he knows that most situations can and shuold be solved with tact and not brute force. Marsellis has plenty of "Hard, Pipe Hittin' N1gg@s", Jules is like an officer, smart enough to be trusted to get stuff done with minimal collataral damage. Plus, Jimmy is his friend, and I get the impression that Jimmy is close to the gangster shite, but not part of it. He's just the closest safe place Jules could get to.
I watched the movie again last night for about the 30th time. It's perfect. It's brilliant. And it's timeless. This scene is goddamn awesome:
quote:
Jules: [Vincent and Jules are cleaning the inside of the car which is covered in blood] Oh, man, I will never forgive your arse for this shite. This is some fricked-up repugnant shite.
Vincent: Jules, did you ever hear the philosophy that once a man admits that he's wrong that he is immediately forgiven for all wrongdoings? Have you ever heard that?
Jules: Get the frick out my face with that shite! The motherfricker that said that shite never had to pick up itty-bitty pieces of skull on account of your dumb arse.
Vincent: I got a threshold, Jules. I got a threshold for the abuse that I will take. Now, right now, I'm a frickin' race car, right, and you got me the red. And I'm just sayin', I'm just sayin' that it's frickin' dangerous to have a race car in the frickin' red. That's all. I could blow.
Jules: Oh! Oh! You ready to blow?
Vincent: Yeah, I'm ready to blow.
Jules: Well, I'm a mushroom-cloud-layin' motherfricker, motherfricker! Every time my fingers touch brain, I'm Superfly T.N.T., I'm the Guns of the Navarone! IN FACT, WHAT THE frick AM I DOIN' IN THE BACK? YOU'RE THE MOTHERfrickER WHO SHOULD BE ON BRAIN DETAIL! We're frickin' switchin'! I'm washin' the windows, and you're pickin' up this ****'s skull!
I love the way Jules reacts when he realizes he's "on brain detail". Kills me.
I also love the short exchange between Vincent and Butch at the bar. Right away Vincent starts getting up in Butch's shite, like somehow he just nkows they are going to go at it later. Vincent calls him "paluka", like he knows Butch is a boxer. I wonder if they had run ins before?

Agree with the previous post. Jules wasn't afraid of jimmy, they are/were friends(jimmy's uninhibited use of the word n-gger to Jules). Jules knows that he needs jimmy and is putting jimmy in a really bad spot, so he doesn't react to jimmy's tantrum.

Yeah - and Jimmy knows that the shite is pretty deep - he complains and bitches about it but he never tells them "No" even a single time - so that tells you all you need to know - 2 cats pull up early in the morning with a car drenched in blood and headless Marvin in the back. All he does is curse and help out, best he can.
BTW - Phil LaMarr (Marvin) is credited with the change to the script - originally, Vincent is supposed to shoot him in the throat and in lieu of having him slowly suffocate, Jules and Vincent decide to put him out of his misery. LaMarr (mainly a funny guy, MadTV and voiceover work) suggested the change to the instant kill - and QT agreed it would be funnier and cut down on how unlikeable it would make Jules and Vincent after that.
It remains the only onscreen death of a non-villain at which I laugh out loud.

I love this part...that whole movie is epic...it is and always will be in my top 5 GOAT...

Disagree. I felt like 1) Jules was being diplomatic and results-oriented, 2) Jimmy was a connected guy to some degree, or formerly was, or was a "friend" of a boss or someone. Jimmy clearly had some unspoken status in the situation - he spoke too boldly and bluntly (to gangster/murderers no doubt) and likewise received respect from them, for him to just be some guy.

This is good analysis - and the focus of the entire scene makes this clear - they are moving heaven and earth to avoid a problem between Jimmy and Bonnie - it seems assumed that the problem would be easily solvable but for Bonnie, who forms the ticking clock and adds tension to the scene - not the capital crime they're trying to cover up (which seems easy, relatively speaking, except for this ticking clock).
And why is Bonnie important? Because she is Jimmy's wife.

also disagree.
Jules is smart, he knows Jimmy holds all the cards so he has to play it that way.
Jules held the cards at the diner bc he knew if he wanted Honeybunny and Pumpkin woulda been dead as fried chicken.
Lucky for them they caught him in a transitional time in his life.
Same as with Flock of Seagulls and Brett. He can play ringmaster bc he's got them unprepared (even though they shoulda had shotguns). But bc of Marvin not telling them about the 3rd guy a Seinfeld lookalike in the bathroom with a hand cannon, Jules realizes that even when he holds the cards some unexpected shite coulda went down. and not only taken him out of the life but his life. so he assesses the future and decides he'd rather walk the earth and nail his vegetarian (which pretty much makes him a vegetarian) GF than have to account on unreliable ex Madtv informants to keep his arse alive. He lives in a world where miracles are a one time thing and a bumpy road can get you shot in the face. even being a bum is safer. a fricking bum.
but he's not a bum. he's gonna be the shepherd.

i don't think the me in my late teens and 20's appreciated that speech enough. now, it's my favorite moment in the film.

Weakest scene in a great movie.
What heft does Jimmy have to talk shite like that to Jules, who is otherwise a bad MF? Jimmy's repetitive use of the N word feels forced and awkward. But Tarantino always does that.
Couldn't disagree more. Taranteno's delivery in that scene was excellent. In a situation like that, tensions are very high. People are not worried about pleasantries. People revert to their most normal speach, which in this case caused Taranteno's character to speak in vulgar terms. Great scene.

Is it possible that Jules is Bonnie's brother? Jimmy and Jules could have a personal history way beyond the underworld or just being old friends. They could be family and that is why he allows Jimmy to freak out the way that he does. He knows that Bonnie will divorce Jimmy because he has known Bonnie her whole life.
Take out the middle segment of Jules' "verse" that he speaks and it does give some credence that this could be the case.

Blessed is he who in the name of charity and goodwill shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he (Jimmy) is truly his brother's(Jules) keeper and the finder of lost children.

Intriguing theory, but I cannot endorse it. Clearly, Bonnie is supposed to be African American, and Pam Greer was originally considered if the role was going to be larger.
Venessia Valentino actually played Bonnie in Pulp Fiction.
However, he refers to Jimmy as his "partner" not his brother or brother-in-law. There is little chance that Bonnie could be married to Jimmy AND be Jules' sister and not know and understand the life. The answer wouldn't have been to race against the clock - it would have been to intercept her or give her a partial, cryptic explanation that she could accept.
The more likely explanation is that Bonnie is a complete civilian and has rejected the gangster part of Jimmy's past - he's still "half in" it appears, but has to conceal it from Bonnie, or else invoke her likely "zero tolerance" policy for "gangster shite" - now, Jules is no stranger to her, and Marcellus knows this:
quote:
No frickin' shite she'll freak. That ain't no kinda answer. You know her, I don't. How bad, a lot or a little?
So, it's very possible this is the bigger part of the race against the clock - if Bonnie sees Jules, she'll definitively know Jimmy is up to his old tricks.

I love Travolta's reaction, "aw man, I shot Marvin in the face."

Jules could be trying to keep his real family separate from his crime "family". That's why he calls Jimmy partner. Family can be used as leverage against him.
As far as her not knowing about the life, it's possible that he "quit" when Jimmy quit and that she would be extremely pissed about being lied to for years by her brother and would divorce Jimmy because she would assume that he was lying about being retired from his life of crime as well. This is in line with the second part of your response.

That is an awful lot of fill in the blanks - I reiterate, I'm intrigued, but I see too many arguments against it. Just didn't have a family vibe to it.
More like - "Jimmy was my partner until he got married and settled down". It's clear that Jules and Vincent just started working together and weren't working like a well-oiled machine yet. They had each other's back, but clearly this was Jules' mission and Vincent was sent to give him backup.

Now that you mention it, If you really wanted to extrapolate further, almost seems like Bonnie had some deeper unstated importance, eg, she was the "connected" one, like someone's daughter. That almost sounds more likely considering that she was ultimately the one that all involved (three seasoned killers and Jimmy) were going to great lengths to not piss off.
Or maybe it's just an all too typical example of a slightly hen-pecked guy trying to avoid a nag attack.

When Mr. Wolf is asking for Jimmy's sheets that were a present from his Aunt Jennie.
Wolf asks if his Uncle and Aunt were Millionares. He then says "Well your Uncle Marcellus is".
I thought that that meant Marcellus was Bonnie's Uncle but I think we've had one of these Threads where that was disproved.

Is the scene where Tarantino is married to a sister yet says nword every 5 seconds? Don't care for it and it's a big part of why I can't stand him.
