Not sure if a vps is what I'm looking for, but can anyone recommend a hosting service that's basically a Ubuntu/Debian virtual machine? I need something that allows root or sudo access and lets me install and do whatever on the machine, preferably via ssh. Also need sftp or scp access.
Flexibility is paramount. Gonna use it for testing, and for deployment if I get there, of random websites/apps I'm working on. I've been using a spare computer on my LAN, but I want to graduate from that.
TIA.

AWS has a variety of flavors to choose from, and I believe you can use it free for a year.
There are many other free vps options, but lots of large scale apps use AWS, so it's a good way to go if you want to learn stuff IMO.

Digital ocean is phenomenal and low cost. Digital ocean has Ubuntu.
Allows you to spin up servers whenever you need.

I use ChicagoVPS, my server is a quad core, 2GB RAM, 50GB disk, 2TB monthly bandwith, 1Gbit connection. 2 IPv4 addresses and I pay $40 a year. I got in on a special a few years ago and for the price it is great. They had issues a few years back expanding, but none since then. I get about 99.9% uptime, which is way more than I need. But, for high availability, I would suggest someone else.
