i fell off the wagon (or is it on?) for a couple years after my senior year when i had a teacher fail me for a very thorough paper i wrote for english because i "plagiarized." never showed me any proof, just didnt believe a stoner kid who skipped her class every other day could put together something of that quality ... almost cost me my diploma. then i stumbled across all my ready writing works dating back to junior high and i was right back in it. took some advanced courses during the summer. have a couple of family members that have had work published so i have some good help to lean on if i ever want to take it seriously, and if i have the balls i may shoot you an email one day

used to love going to the library as a kid and just reading a lot, i think that's where my roots were planted.

My goal is not to be mean, I assure you. I'm working through Bard's stuff during breaks from my own writing, so if you send it, I'll read it.

The author can only ask questions of the workshop once the critique is over (the idea being that the piece must speak for itself).

Gotcha. That's pretty much what we did, whether it was by design or accident, I don't really know.

anything i have happened to scribble down over the last couple years will need a lot of revising and polish before i'd show it to anyone, but its something i plan on paying more attention to over the summer.

In other words, you'll be a lawyer forever like the rest of us?

Not exactly sure what you mean by "Iowa method,"

Currently the best of the best in terms of MFA Creative Writing programs. It's at Iowa University. I think they currently have like 17 Pulitzer Prize winners over their history.

I do, but I never share my stories.

Mainly from the fear of, what if people didn't like them or think I'm any good.

I don't know if I could take that kind of rejection.

That's not what I meant. I obviously know about the Writer's Workshop at the University of Iowa. I had just never heard of the "Iowa Method" before.

Iowa is a fantastic program, but it isn't for everyone. The Michener Center at UT is also pretty incredible. Recently, UC-Irvine has produced Michael Chabon and David Benioff. LSU is also highly respected actually.

IIRC (maybe things have changed) the state of Arkansas had a few decent ones, too. If I ever go back that way, I'll probably look at a low-residency program of which there are a few good ones.

I really appreciate the time and effort. It's a bit of a humbling experience but each comment and edit shows me how to refine my very rough skill.

I do. Started in 2008 with a few short stories. Have written a few novellas and co-authored a few books with some really great authors and friends. All of it has been traditionally published (though mostly smaller houses) and I dabbled a tad in self publishing before realizing it wasn't for me.

I was nominated for an award (Bram Stoker Award) a few years ago for an anthology I assembled.

I also had an agent for a while, but it wasn't doing me much good so we parted ways about a year ago.

Writing is great. It's fun, therapeutic, and just a great feeling to know what you've created is enjoyed by others.

It is definitely not a personal thing. Keep at it. The idea is there, so take what I said as it is meant to be taken: a way to help. Developing thick skin comes with getting pummeled by critiques, and it frankly wasn't that rough a critique. You should have seen some of the ones that I gave when in undergrad.

And of course, I'm no authority. I know how to write my way. If you think you've got a better idea, by all means, curse me out and do what you want. After all, if I were so great, I'd be getting paid to do this shite.

I remember you talking about this a while back; something about a zombie shark or something crazy? I remember thinking: "That sounds ridiculous," but it was apparently meant to be--a la Sharknado. Is that right?

No zombie sharks. It's a serial killer/shark novella that was actually re-released by an Australian based publishing house. So far, reception has been mostly positive.

The zombie novel came out by the same company a few months ago and it has also been received well.

Yep. Three books (one ethnography, a novel, and a textbook) and about thirty articles published

I used to and still occasionally write poetry and short stories. I have ideas for a few novellas, but anxiety and depression usually keep me from finishing anything. I write Dostoyevskian existential drama. Exciting stuff.
