Question for the OT about starting a life

So... My ex step dad wants to pay for me to make a move on a new career. I'm not asking my mom for money bc she helped me through college. My dad is a piece of shite and won't help with anything. Should I take him up on the offer (which he doesn't want to be reimbursed for)? Should I insist on paying him back? Or should I take the money and not look back?

Accept the money with grace and gratitude, if that's what you want.
Insisting on paying the money back is all well and good but you have to actually, you know, pay the money back. Don't make a production out of doing that and then not deliver.

He wants to pay you for what now?

I will fulfill the promise no problem... It's just the fact that he has no ties to me anymore. I mean he practically raised me, but I'm not connected to him anymore. My only option is a bs loan at 36% interest for a year

A respectable person would be gracious and pay him back whenever the time comes. Post job of course.

To take a job and move somewhere... But I'm freshly graduated and have no money for the move

Take the money and pay him back later.
Consider yourself really lucky as well....think how many others would love to have this dilemma.

He understands that and has the money to spare... I just wanted to do it on my own and got hit with this bomb. It will help out big time early, but I feel guilty

That's how I feel, and he knows what I'm will be worth (not bragging just saying)... I think he sees it as an investment, but that's just added pressure I continually deal with

What bomb? Did you plan on working locally and living in mama's house? How did you frick up your credit so bad that you can only qualify to borrow at 36%? What kind of job are you getting? You sound like may have good intentions, but are a little bit dumb. You might ought to just stay at mama's and avoid the perils of moving to the big city.

Lol... I haven't lived at "mamas" in 5 years. I just have 0 credit bc I have never borrowed money. I have an engineering job I'm taking

Your future sounds bright and this ex father in law sounds like a good guy so pay him back to keep that good connection between you two. If your real dad is a POS you may want to keep the ex father law around if and when you start your own family.

So you've lived away from home for five years and have an engineering job offer that (I'll assume) doesn't involve a choo-choo train...
At some point during the five years you were in college, did you ever give any consideration to what was going to happen when you graduated? Surely the possibility that you may have to relocate out of town, or even out of state, must have occurred to you. Seems like a guy smart enough to get an engineering degree would also be smart enough to plan for the inevitable and try to establish a credit history or at least start saving some money.
Take the money from your ex-stepfather. You sound like you're going to need all the help you can get.

quote:a loan being paid back without interest is not an investment, so i don't really see why that should be added pressure. Would you prefer to go it alone and pile on considerable debt just so if you fail, you will (presumably) fail anonymously? Because realistically speaking, if he is intelligent/successful then he is probably aware at least in some respect of your relative costs, and so therefore he will see you as a success or a failure completely irrespective of your accepting and repaying his loan.

I acquired no debt bc I applied to med school and didn't want added pressure... I got wait listed and have received an offer with a company I see a future with (albeit starting at the bottom)... Any college kid that paid their way knows how hard it is to save money

I'm pretty sure that's what the quote was... I could be wrong but it was really high
