Check out how they treat head and neck cancer in these pictures. They have a mask that covers your head and shoulders and bolt you down to a table. Imagine feeling nauseated from chemo and bolted down like that. Oh, and radiation burns. If an increased risk of having to endure that is worth it, you must REALLY love your dip.

They literally have to cut off your face if you get it. Not worth it.

Also, even if they cure your face cancer, the radiation you receive during treatment puts you at risk to develop other cancers in the future.

Which is worse for you dip or smoking? Or are they both equally bad?

They are both about the worst things you can do for your health.

I see pictures of that stuff all the time but I've never seen anyone IRL without a jaw or any other facial problems

I know it exists I've just never seen it in person...do these people just become hermits because they are disfigured?

People with early lesions that are detected typically radiation or resection can be curative without much function loss or disfigurement. You would probably never know they had surgery/radiation unless you examine their oral cavity. They learn to adapt to speaking and articulating if you resected part of the tongue for instance.

head and neck cancers have a propensity to either recur or establish a new site, which can lead to more aggressive treatments.

Those who present in advance stages or have major recurrences are the ones who have the major surgeries. In this day and age, These surgeries often cosmetically can at least make the outward appearance okay, while the function of speaking, swallowing becomes a different ball game. Laypeople are likely more familiar with those who have had a laryngectomy than those who have a portion of their mandible removed and reconstructed with a bone from elsewhere inthe body.

At the institution I'm at, we probably do these major cases about 1/week with many more be too far advance to have a surgery, and are only offered (ETA: *additional* as chemo/radiation are typically part of most treatment for H&N cancers) chemo/radiation as a last ditch resort for pain control in many cases.

Alcohol is statistically worse when you include all deaths related to its consumption, but most people who look down on tobacco love their booze so that's not something anyone wants to think about.

My boozing has gone up slightly since I decided to quit. Now during a night of drinking when Id normally stop and have a lipper, I have another drink.

Yeah I've actually bought the product Bacc Off but that shite was way too dry so I didn't care for it

I've heard good things about Smokey Mountain

Have you quit for good since using that product?

a nurse once told me their rule of thumb is to double whatever the patient tells them about alcohol and tobacco use. So if somebody says they use one can a week, figure on two or more.

2 cans of Copenhagen a day for many years. Brutal quitting, but it has been 15 years. If they found a cure, or if someone said it didn't cause cancer, I'd go buy a can right now.

As an oncologist, do you worry that the legalization of marijuana will put you out of a job?

Yeah that bacc off is complete shite. Only reason I bought it is because I could find it in a gas station. Good to hear there is better stuff out there
