Marines have become pussies with the rise of the Millenials. I think that is the change we are seeing.

I always thought marines were supposed to be badass. I'm not saying they aren't, but I know someone who used to be an active marine. He's very small with no muscle and he has the attitude of a millennial. He doesn't like to work and he is lazy. Are the marines getting lazy or is this guy an outlier?
You need to learn about odds and percentages.

Exactly most military members are not combat trained. My platoon worked along side a marine recon platoon for 4 months. Some of the best dudes I fought with they hated marine pogs as much as we hated our own. Hate is strong disliked I'll say,a combat Marine has more respect and comradery with combat soldiers than just a marine.

I'm a pog. I was a medic but I did earn the title "doc" from my peers in other mos's. I do regret not going through efmb

Despite my previous post, if you go through what it takes to be a Marine, I tip my hat to you. The training and attitude hasn't changed. It takes a special human being to accomplish it and any who have should be proud and respected by all Americans.

Physically, I know what you're talking about, Marines appear very lean. My anecdotal experience in the weight room is that the 165 lb Marine is stronger than the tubby 220 lb soldier whose MOS is 42A.
I struggle to explain this to people. That your a lot of the marines that are in combat MOS's are lean rather than huge and ripped.

There have been tens of thousands of kids just like him. They just didn't stand out when you were young.

I for one am not going to criticize anyone who served for our country. I don't care if they were on the front line or clerical. frick that. Proud of all of them.

My own opinion as a former enlisted Marine: The Marine Corps bumps your skill up a notch or two... usually not much more.
All Marines get taught some basic fighting skills. When Marines branch off into their various jobs (MOS) after basic training, many-- like various admin, avionics or other technical jobs-- don't receive much additional combat training (this was my path).
In my case, I would guess I could probably win 7 out of 10 fights before I went into the Marines. By the time I finished bootcamp and the additional infantry training after that, maybe I could take 8 out of 10 fights. So maybe I was slightly more of a badass, but I knew guys who would've destroyed me just as easily after bootcamp as they would've before. (Real life fighting experience will almost always trump controlled "do these moves if you're in a fight" training.)
What the Marines do especially well is to train Marines to follow orders-- particularly in terms of responding quickly and efficiently to threats with the necessary level of violence. In doing so, they produce a very effective fighting force-- better than the regular Army most of the time, but not on the level of any of the Special Forces, all of which receive substantially more combat training.
Seals, Force Recon (Marines), Rangers, etc. are all statistically likely to be badasses on an individual level. Most infantry Marines are not on that level-- with the exception of those who were already badasses when they joined the service. I do think the Marines attract more badasses than the other services, so if you knew 100 service members from each branch, you'd find a higher percentage of badass Marines, but that's also my opinion.

Upvoted. Great post. I had an NCO who was a former Marine and a Ranger in Mogadishu. He described the difference like this: "In Mog we came across a building with a sniper. We sent a scout forward who hit him with a 203 round. In the Marines, we would have just leveled the building."

PI drill sergeants are not allowed to do some of the things they got away with in the 50s and 60s. It was more outside of training tactics used that were stopped.
