I think Les has the right idea here. Instead of trying to score 40 points a game to win, ensure that 14-17 points a game is enough for a win as the opponent is worn down and unable to get through the dline.

Alabama has proven time and time again that we can't beat them with a strong defense and running game. When a great or even good defense on the other side stacks the line with players, there is no run game good enough to break through that. You have to loosen them up with passes, screen plays, draw plays, end arounds, trick plays. Otherwise we wind up like we did in the 2011 SEC game against Georgia with no first downs in the first half and none in the second for quite a while. Yes we won that game going away because of Honey Badger's kick return and some great defense and finally breaking some running backs loose but it was a close thing.

But it was just a prediction of what was to come in the title game against Alabama. Happened many times after that also. Even when we had Mettenberg, Les would not throw when we needed to. Like the Alabama game when just one more first down would have locked it for us and we went conservative again.
