Women were a commodity back in the day, if a man didn't have a dowry, he could get a wife that way for "free".
It also did contribute to genetic diversity over history.

I have a half brother in Timalkan, Obesterreich in Austria. His mom and her family had migrated to Germany as factory workers during the war. My dad would have been 20 in '45. She would have been, ahh, younger than that. After returning to Austria, she went on to marry a former German Colonel who adopted and raised my brother. My dad sent money and exchanged letters throughout his childhood but I was unaware I had a brother until he turned up for my grandmother's funeral in 1982, (I was twelve.) He and his family have visited numerous times since and both my sisters have made the return visit but I have yet to go. If I remember the story correctly my dad was busted down from E-6 to E-4 for violating the nonfraternization policy. He was eventually discharged at E-5.
One thing that I do remember clearly is that in 1982, Mer Rouge, LA was entirely unprepared for an Austrian man's views on appropriate swimwear.

on the Speedo in '82.
My pops was in the U.S. Occupation Forces in Japan from '45 through '47. He was in charge of the City of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture for a year of that time. I probably have some relations there as a product of his relations there.
EDIT: I know he delivered a baby on a Japanese train while there, we have the clipping from "Stars and Stripes". That one wasn't his, it was a stranger's baby.

I'm sure the number of women raped in the East following Barbarossa till the end must be insane.
I don't know, the perception created by Nazi Germany is that Russians were slime, sub-human race of people, but let's face it horny is what it is, and pus*y is pus*y.

Initially, a lot of the rapes committed by Russian forces were committed not by the front line soldiers of the Red Army but by the follow up hoards of Mongols, etc who, per Stalin's orders, were allowed to run wild as revenge. And how do you classify it as one rape when the number of gang rapes on one female were common? In addition to the millions of rapes, there were also thousands of suicides both before the Russians took over the city & then after the rapes had occurred. And it's hard to call it resorting to prostitution when German females were forced to have sex to survive, not for "luxurious items" but for basic food/living conditions for themselves and their kids. Never understood the reason why, but apparently the Mongols, as they were invading from the East, were famous for gang raping a female & then crucifying her to a barn door.

I'm sure the vast majority were simply the result of healthy young men and women having sex. You gotta figure there were a lot less German boys aged 18-25 immediately following the war than there was before. And then hundreds of thousands of foreign soldiers aged 18-25 in their place. People that age like to frick. No surprises here.
Let's not forget that the American soldiers had a few dollars as well. That made them more attractive. Read Leon Standifer's book "Binding Up the Wounds." It's a great piece on the Allied occupation of Germany.

I'd be highly shocked if US troops did any of the raping, outside of maybe a few rogues.
