Just because a school requires 'higher test scores for admission' does not make it better. 'Higher academic standards usually just means 'admissions standards.
Higher admissions standards tends to lend itself to a more intelligent student body. A more intelligent student body, in turn, tends to lend itself to a more successful student body. A more successful student body tends to result in higher alumni donations.
And the cycle continues.

I think his point (with which I agree) is that having smarter people in the classroom doesn't necessarily make the level of instruction better.
Where "higher admission standards" can matter is: a) if you want to do research then certain schools will have more renown professors and b) getting jobs.

I think this is a little backwards.
Schools with greater resources, prestige, reputation find they can more selective in admissions.
They can pick and choose among lots of very intelligent applicants.
Not all Ph D's are the same, not all libraries are the same and not all grading/ graduation standards are the same.
Metry seems to think that as long as the books are the same and profs are Ph D's the education must be the same.
If only it were so....

Nothing wrong with a degree from LSU. Yes better degrees are available. LSU is not Ivy League or Vandy or Stanford, but it is marginally better or worse depending on your major from the schools LSU competes with for recruits.
To be honest, how many of the people LSU recruits is after one of the top educational programs the nation has to offer. Many of them are the first person to attend a major university in their family. Nothing wrong with that and nothing wrong with a LSU degree.

All about ROI.

LSU is right there with Kentucky, Arky, Miss State in terms of most current rankings of the schools. Very low Tier 1.
In career earnings averages, LSU does a little better than some other SEC schools.
With the impact of Jindal's magic yet to register, it does not appear we will improve on these rankings.

you are a genius. You should call CLM and see if he can work you into the recruiting department.

You can be a tremendous success with an LSU degree, and you can be an abysmal failure with a Harvard degree. LSU fans tend to be such a self- loathing lot.

#1 fans in the country is a huge stretch. Saban wins a BCSNCG his 3rd year on the job in Alabama, they build him a statue.
Les Miles wins a BCSNCG game his 3rd year on the job and the "#1 fans" call him an idiot and say that he only won because of Saban recruits.
I guess that Saban won in 2009 because of Shula recruits?

if u want to study engineering (specifically chemical or petro) then lsu is a solid choice that has good connections in those industries. every thing else (except obscure auditing, etc) is average or bad. you can get a good education anywhere as far as getting an ok day job, but we arent that prominent or connected relative to top flight schools.
tulane really isnt all that either, but their finance dept is connected.
as an example, i wouldnt wanna waste my mba shot on any school in louisiana unless its for promotion within a company i already work for and theyre ok with it.
