Is that fricking true? I was thinking about joining the Coast Guard, so I can actually do something with my life. Guess I'm destined to be forever alone and a loser still living with my mom.

Yep. If your dinghy sinks you have to be able to walk back to shore w/o drowning.

Ask for the "tippy toes" measurement.

Yeah, we have two. One downtown where the Buoy Tenders hang out and one where I live, where the Cruiser is stationed. There's also a radio station in between the two.

We had the helicopter from Sitka help out looking for a woman lost on a mountain last year. My kids and I were hiking and we became part of the search effort. They had a training session to try to get the local rescue group dogs accustomed to the choppers.

Doug Munro, Medal of Honor

Not sure why the USCG is getting disrespected on this thread but try jumping into 40 degree water in a storm sometime, let along flying the heli in that weather. SM1c Douglas A. Munro, USCG bought it helping some Marines.

Good read... I sure would like to read more. Could you list the other USCG MOH recipients?

I went Navy but if I had to do it again I would have went Coast Guard and probably stayed in. Almost always near a beach and don't have to spend half your career crossing one ocean or another. We used to fly down to Lampedusa Italy to do currency exchange and check cashing for a small coast guard post on the island and everyone fought to get to go, those guys ate like kings. Steak and lobster every time we went.

Sure... join the coast guard if you want to spend more time away from family than any branch of the military and have people with little man syndrome in charge of you because they can't accept cg isn't that damn important.

Went to one of their leadership schools and calm down guys... it's not that serious. Wife has been on a boat 3 of our 4 years together. They are gone a lot.

This keeps getting posted, but it's not true.
Standard for height for all branches, including the Coast Guard, can be found in AR 40-501, Standards of Medical Fitness which is the same regulation that MEPS uses.

Damn some of y'all completely missed it

Freaking out as if there were actually some height requirement well above the average height
