Your math is off, I'm 30 and knew both of those songs well. My brother is 23 and he knows Beck's music well.

Guero was released in 2005 and its hits were on the radio until 2008. Modern Guilt was a top 5 album in the U.S. and the U.K. in 2008 and was on the radio until about 2011. This person is just wrong about Beck, he has no idea what he's talking about.

Pretty sure I grew up in the mid 90s.

I'm not trying say the dude isn't good or irrelevant. I'm trying to say he hasn't done anything good in almost 20 years ago

Your problem is you think good is only equal to sales. That just isn't true.

Besides this new album that really didnt do that good)

The grammy it just won begs to differ.

ood) and he isn't some huge rock star that everyone knows about like you few people in this thread believe he is.

No one is claiming he is a rockstar. We are claiming he is well known, and that's a fact.

Ace, you sound as silly as Kanye when he was ripping Beck.

Dude is an a-hole no doubt but he is very talented and one hell of a performer.

The weird thing is that Kayne owes a lot to Beck, musically, without even realizing it.

I'm not even a huge rap/hip hop fan but you are wrong brah.

the biggest rap song of the last few years was about shopping at the thrift shop.

geez, its almost like Kayne trolled people into being as foolish as the shite he says.

You guys keep mentioning his "huge" hits Loser and Where it's at. Those songs were relevant 20 years ago.

Both of those were released in 1994 and 1996. So let's say you start really listening to good music when you are 16 (probably way to low of an age limit)?

Its a response to your idiotic comment that 75% of people don't know who Beck is. He has been a superstar for 20+ years.

You would have to ~35+ now to have grown up when this guy was actually good

His new album is great. In fact, it is so well-respected by his peers in the Recording Academy they gave him a Grammy for Best Record of 2014.

The Grammy's aren't a popularity contest.

How so? I'm not a big rap fan. I cannot name a Kanye song, song he's written or, other than Alicia Keys, familiar with any of his production work (and maybe he wrote/co-wrote some AK songs - ) - in any event, I don't care if he wins A HUNDRED Grammys - he will never be in the same conversation, talent wise as, for example, Quincy Jones, Paul McCartney, heck Phil Collins.

Being in the right place at the right time, in a genre of music that requires very little actual talent, with the right technological enhancements does not equal talent. Not now, not ever.

ETA: He should be demonstrating humility and a similar (even if feigned) sense of surprise as the rest of us at his "accolades" rather than shitting on other artists with his assclownery.

By saying Kanye has no talent. It's a completely asinine thing to say, regardless of how big of an arrogant douchebag he is.

Kanye has a ton of talent, although that autotune performance was awful.

He is just an insufferable piece of shite.

Beck also has a ton of talent, but he is a humble nice guy.

Well, honestly he is similar to Beck in that regard. That's why I made my comment earlier about Kanye owing a lot to Beck.

Beck is the epitome of post-modern music. Ironic play with style. Non-conventional narrative. Metaphysical skepticism. A preference for the virtual over the real.

Kanye is, in many ways, the epitome of post post modernism, which adopts some of the same elements of post-modernism but takes them seriously -- not just ironically. Kanye plays with style but actually believes he is innovating. He plays with narrative and believes it is artistic. He is a reaction against skepticism and the virtual -- his belief in himself and his greatness is in fact very real.

But you couldn't get from Point A to Point B without Beck. That's the point. Not sure Beyonce holds the same place in music history as either Beck or Kanye, honestly.

The fact that you claim what he does required very little talent is just flat wrong my man.

You not being able to name a single song he has done when you admit you dont even listen to the genre means exactly jack and shite. I have no idea why you would even try and use that as a point. I can't name but one Taylor Swift song (Shake It Off) and the only reason I can is b/c somebody put the track over an old aerobics video. Does that mean she isn't talented?

Also, who gives a shite if his talent level is not to the level of the artists you listed? That doesn't mean he has no talent and is a hack.

I'm sorry but you are making yourself sound just as dumb as Kanye simply b/c you have a bug up your arse about him.

Kanye is one of the more talented people in the business today.

He is still a raging count.

I also think Beck is one of the most talented musicians and artists around.

He seems like the nicest dude fricking ever .

I don't much care for her, either. But she seems like a nice gal with a good head on her shoulders.

I've made no secret that I'm no big fan of rap. Tupac had something to say. I recognize his talent, even though I'm not a huge fan. Ditto for Dr. Dre - a lot of his stuff is repetitive as well, but his influence on others is real and unmistakeable, particularly on the composition and production side, I think he has a real talent - the first "real" rap music I got into was The Chronic (not the lyrics, which are, for the most part the same repetitive, "gangster" rap stylings that constitute the bulk of rap/hip-hop, but the beats and the groove - solid, old school R&B vibe). Ditto for Dre's work with Marshall.

I never got Kanye - don't get Kanye or any of the autotune generation, TBH. All it takes is a name and sampled music to get such a recording in the charts and on the awards list - apparently.

Here's the difference between Beck and Kanye:

Beck just made an album of folk music and it is good (won grammy). He could make a rock album that would be good. He could also make a rap album and it would be good. I know this because he uses all these music styles in previous albums, and they are all good (good sales, won awards, etc..).

Kanye makes rap albums that are good (won grammies, good sales). But there's no way Kanye could make an album with any other type of music genre that would be any good. His musical talent is limited to rap, which in my opinion is the genre of music that takes the least amount of talent to be successful in.

What are you basing this on?

Kanye has worked with artist outside of rap.

How do you figure rap is the easiest album to put together?]

If I have to look it up...I will...but Beck won for Best Rock Album! I am willing to bet my Becks beer at Lunch today that Boynance was not nominated for Rock album...Kayne is a comedian...

hell I looked it up....bunch of old people were nominated for the one that Beck won...lol....Tom Petty, U2, The Black Keys, and some jackass named Ryan Adams...yes indeed, give his grammy for a rock album to Boyance....
