Someone else mentioned it, but you should check out the Chelsea subreddit
Just pop in to a few game threads and you'll get a good grasp of what's going on

I wouldn't obsess over picking a favorite team.
I just started to follow Newcastle and am enjoying it. (still dont know enough to get into a real conversation about them). It took me almost a decade to find a team.

That explains it. Reddit is full of Arsenal fans.
That was actually the last place I went.
Arseblog is what really helped Arsenal shoot up my favorite team's list

Thanks for the replies. Seems there are a good bit of Chelsea haters. I can't wait for champions league play to start up. Looking forward to seeing Chelsea and PSG play. I can't get enough of Zlatan.

Used to work on Baker St. right across from the Sherlock house. Boss had season tickets to Spurs, so I ended up going to a lot of games that year. So I guess I kind of just fell into being a Spurs fan.

Been watching for twenty years and still don't have a team except for the usmnt.

I picked Sunderland (fricking stupid) because they stayed up at the end of the year I was watching a lot online. Last year's relegation escape was fun as hell and their progression (or avoidance of relegation) will always be most important to me. I've been on their boards for a couple years now and have learned a ton about the region. Also realized that my really good friend's dad who worked at Avondale shipyard on the Westbank when we were kids was actually going to that region when he had to go to England pretty regularly for work when we were in elementary school(CSB).
However, I've also really grown to like southhampton as well, and the manner in which their Academy produces such great prospects without the resources of the mega clubs.
I also find myself rooting for spurs, liverpool, and even Man United most of of the time. I just as a whole have really enjoyed reading up on many teams histories, traditions, fans, parks, etc. The only teams I really can say I pull against are arsenal, hull, and Newcastle. Can't really explain to you why(other than Newcastle and that's not even what I'd call true disdain), but just where my interest has taken me over last few years.
I however, don't know how someone could just up and become a die hard fan of a team like Real... I think we all like to watch their play and greatness, but it'd be hard for me to "root" for a team who has multiple players that are worth more on the market than the majority of their opponent's side are collectively.

Exactly why I picked Wolves.
They finished 20th the following year.
Then, they get relegated in the Championship.
The next year they got promoted back to the Championship.
It has been quite a roller coaster ride, but I am a casual fan at best. I only care about the USMNT.

USMNT for me all the way. I have tried to pick a club, but the national team keeps tugging at my heart strings.

I can't get fully into a club team either. It's so fricking contrived that I just can't handle it. Listening to Americans shite talk each other about Man U vs man city or some shite is just absurd to me. More power to you if you are able to look past that and enjoy it, I just can't.

wolves was uber likeable when mick was there too
i also liked them back in 03/04 when they sucked arse alongside leeds but henri camara and kenny miller were doing the business.

I'm with you. It's not like I'm dissing those who will pick a team at random, without having a real connection to the team or city. I just don't really understand it. I find more joy watching and enjoying the game for what an awesome game it is. I also kind of feel like it makes you less biased when it comes to judging teams.

Same here. They are the only soccer team I actively root for.
ETA I lied. I root for a lot of teams each week depending on who my money is with

Then there is no point in explaining to you.

Well that works out, because i didn't ask for an explanation.

I needed a team. Though I played soccer, I haven't watched/played for 15 years. Suddenly deciding to take on leagues abroad is an enormous task for someone like me. I quite literally spent hours on end reading about leagues and clubs and players and managers trying to put together some overarching knowledge.
Anyway, picking/being drawn to a club helped me narrow my focus. Once I really started focusing my attention there, I could sprout out to league opponents, cup opponents, players with current or former connection, etc. It gave me a road map to how I'd tackle the game.
Kudos to those who can just sit back and let it come to them, that'd probably be a more natural way of doing it.

Well not understanding something usually means I need an explanation

Not anymore contrived than someone from North Mississippi rooting for an American professional team. Some people had a favorite player when they were first learning the game and decided to root for the team he plays for even after he left. In my case, I was a big fan of John Stockton and Michael Owen (WC98) growing up. I still root for LFC and Jazz even though they are long gone. Hell, I might be the only non-Mormon Jazz fan (who was not alive when the Jazz played in New Orleans) in the state of Mississippi.
