Jim Thorpe, Mildred "Babe" Didrikson, Babe Ruth, Bill Russell, Otto Graham, Billy Jean King.
Jim Thorpe and Babe Didrikson both ran into racial/sexual prejudice and b.s. about participating as an amateur. Both were multi sport champions.
Babe Didrikson won medals in track in the Olympics and won major events in golf for two decades. She set US records in track and field in more than one event at a one day track meet.
I had a Billy Jean King racquet as a teenager.
Maria Bueno was actually the first tennis star I followed and I learned a lot of tennis from watching her, but Billy Jean King is on Mt Rushmore because she started a league for women as well as winning a lot of major tournaments.
I wish that the men in the NFL had started a union league when the owners locked them out. Billy Jean King pulled it off.
I saw Russell stop Wilt at the rim with the game on the line. More than once. Amazing.
Otto Graham was point guard on his pro basketball league championship team, and was QB of pro league championship football teams 7 times.
He was one of the top two male athletes in US sports history, along with Jim Thorpe.
Ruth you all know the numbers. Pitcher and hitter.
