To save time, it'll be easier to buy a new HDD for the new laptop and install it fresh

That's pretty much what I was thinking I'd need to do. We just wondering if there was anything I could do with the HDD out of my older laptop.

What would be the easiest way to transfer all my files off my old laptop HDD to the new HDD once it's installed?

Obviously, I'd need to install a new OS with the new HDD, right?

What's the best Windows today? 8.1? I saw that 10 is coming soon?

If you've considered purchasing an external hard drive for your media and documents now would be the ideal time. Move your stuff once to the external and then just access it from there without copying it back to the new HDD.
