Watch an MRI machine devour metal objects...

This is pretty cool, and weird since I had an MRI a couple weeks ago. Glad I didn't have any metal in my body.
That pressure is insane.

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and as such an MRI machine features a number of very powerful magnets. Just how powerful? Well, some of you may have seen that House episode where a patient goes into a scanner, to then start screaming wildly because they still have some metal in his or her body. This real-world video, however, shows just how powerfully metal objects can be sucked into the machine.
That pressure is insane.

Every time I have gotten an MRI I still get freaked out and doubting whether I have any metal in my body. Too many episodes of House I guess.

Nice. Got a MRI when i was younger and the Dr walked in with a big arse crescent wrench and told me to put my finger through the hole. Damn thing almost killed us

pretty cool.
Been around those things too often unfortunately

The one time I got an MRI I had the exact same thoughts for the same reasons

Good bye Danny. Peace

Once we get the problem of industrial-scale superconductivity licked, that's going to power our transportation system. Levitating trains and automobiles pulled along by giant magnets.

what about the old school fillings in your teeth? how does it not affect that?

Non ferrous metal.

One of the last times I got one I left my belt on....... shite pulled my hips to the top of that machine real quick

Yep, I have to use special tools when working on MRI machines for this reason. If I go in the room with my keys in my pocket, I can immediately feel the pull when I step through the door. Those magnets are insanely strong.

has to be a ferric (paramagnetic) metal
things like titanium, lead etc are fine
That video is a 4T magnet btw. Noone has those in real medical practice. Most machines in hospitals and imaging centers are 1.5T or less. Some have 3T.
Still super dangerous though. A kid died in New York one time from a head injury (oxygen tank got too close).

Wait, what?
I've only had one MRI before this most recent one, and it was on my ankle. So all I had was the bottom half of my leg in there. But this one was for my back, so I went all the way in. The guy was like "Are you claustrophobic?" and I said no, but man once you get in there, that thing is fricking CLOOOOSE to your face. I could easily see how it would freak a lot of people out. The one saving grace (for those people) is that you can look "up" with your eyes and see the ceiling out the other end of the machine, so it's not like you're in a coffin or something...you could see a way out.
I just tried my best to go to sleep and not move. And it only lasted about 15 minutes (the time with my ankle was a lot longer).

As is the types of metal used in surgical proceedures (screws, plates etc).
I had an emergency MRI a while back and those dumbasses didn't empty my pockets which contained keys and a pocket knife. Fortunately stainless steel and brass is non-magnetic.

I bet that scared the shite out of you.

The one problem with the video I had was that they said it "disintegrated" a stapler.
I'm not sure they know what that word means...I was pretty let down when they threw it in there.

Yea it just kinda stuck to the outer wall part
What a let down. But cool video either way

What Im wondering is why/how would they do this. It must have been a pre-demolition situation.
There is no way to use the magnet anymore with all that stuff in there. And there is no "off" button on a superconducting magnet. The only way to kill the field is to release the liquid helium ("quench" the magnet), which is very expensive and time consuming to refill. THE MAGNET IS ALWAYS ON.
Quenching is also dangerous btw. If the helium is not properly vented, it will displace all the air from the room and everyone will suffocate.
