If so... How does it work? Is it affordable?

Leads for what kind of work?

I saw an ad online for "free bankruptcy leads" for lawyers. I called and it was $400/month for their service.

What are you selling?
Don't pay a company for leads, pay a competitor
Don't pay a company for leads, pay a competitor

Lots of money if you want the Glengary leads.

Some are OK, but nothing replaces a good sales rep.

Work at a law firm that pays for leads. Cost about $50 each and convert at about 15%. Typically a $3000 fee so it works out. Can be a pain in the arse wading through them though. They come in through email and through direct connect via the phone. The direct connect convert at a higher percentage. If you do pay for leads, try to get exclusive leads and don't bother with aged leads. Those are a waste of money in my opinion.

I worked down the hall from an insurance salesman who worked on purchased leads. He made a living, but he worked his arse off calling folks who never panned out. I must've heard his opening spiel a thousand times just walking down the hall. He purchased two kinds of leads: "Verified" ones from a company he repped, and "non-verified" ones from just some internet site. He was getting a 7 or 8 percent closure on the "good" leads and under 2 percent on the others. FWIW.

I used a company for leads for my landscape contracting company. Most customers we contacted turned into a clusterfrick with price shopping and a bunch of run around. Mostly disfunctional people with quite a few "verified" leads that were garbage. Waste of money and would not do it again
