What's the difference in "Alternative rock" and "Indie rock" music?

I know indie used to refer to bands signed to indie labels but now seems to be it's own genre.
Anyway the stuff they play on XMU I guess is considered indie and the stuff on alt nation is considered alternative, and I can't tell a ton of difference between the two styles.
I do think they play on Alt Nation lately is a ton better than the stuff they play on xmu.
I am just wondering what the distinguishing factors between the two are.

I know mainsttream radio rock is considered alternative, Disturbed, Godsmack ect. and I hate that shite. Some new bands considered alternative like Kongos, Milky Chance, and Imagine Dragons are pretty good though.

I wouldn't buy their album or anything but they have one song I like pretty well, forget the name. Most of their stuff is pretty bad though.
That song by them that's really popular, Radiation or whatever is terrible.

I've asked this several times here and have never gotten an answer

both pretty much meaningless terms but I think indie rock as a whole started out with more punk rock DIY ideals and alternative rock not so much. it was just alternative to the mainstream corporate rock.
I still say that "indie" is not a genre which a lot of people seem to think it is.

Some people would have given this thread a chance had you not Imagine Dragoned it.

Neither "indie" nor "alternative" are what they used to be. Back in the day indie could be anything from Black Flag to REM.

Back in the 90s alternative rock was the more popular version of indie rock. Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, and other big names were alternative whereas bands like Tad or Belly that didn't quite blow up were considered indie.

Just saying that in 2015 apparently a straight up pop band like Imagine Dragons is considered "alternative".

So what is 'alternative' an alternative to?

quote:I have both as a top 5 preset so I can see what's on at all times. XMU is more like college radio used to be. Alt. Nation can get kinda heavy. I find I click on XMU more often.

Alternative was an adjective back in The good ol' days. It wasn't a specific sound but rather just different music from mainstream radio crap. Then it became a genre and started sucking. Indie, for the most part, sucked from the start.

Formulas or douchey stuff which catches like wildfire and there are hundreds who try to emulate it.
