Anyone know the cost of a metal roof? Is it a pain to keep it rom denting? Does it help with utility bill?

More than comp shingle, but lasts twice as long.

can't help you w/the cost, but metal roofs don't just "dent".....unless some jackass gets up there and jumps up and down or a large tree limb falls on it.

Doesn't dent, mine is about ten years old and leaks like a motherfricker. I have to deal with it tomorrow...

That sucks. Bad installation? Or is it common

Not sure why, but at first glance I read this as "meatloaf question"

Leaks.
But then you fix it.
And then it leaks.
Standing seam is better I hear, but I'll never know.

What is it being installed on... an existing roof with sheathing or just roof purlins? What is the roof slope? Shallow pitch roofs are way more likely to leak, especially when not properly installed. Standing seam roofs aren't attached by screws, so they're less likely to leak, but they're also more expensive.

8 on 12 new construction

Those screws start leaking around 10-14 years, then they all need to be replaced with a larger screw, then another 10-14 years later they start leaking again, but they don't make a screw bigger than the one in the roof...

My fatherinlaw put one on his house he built 18 years ago. The metal is still original but he has had to change the screws out 2 or 3 times and each time going one size up on the screw. That's a pain but he likes the look so he deals with it. It has no dents and has survived every hurricane just fine. IDK about the electricity bill.

A roof that steep is much less likely to leak.
Also if you sheath the roof with OSB then put down a vapor barrier and 1x4 "nailers" (at spacing recommended by type of roof panel) to provide an airspace b/w the roof and sheathing... it will likely never leak.

If you install the metal roof with exposed fasteners you should have a layer of "ice and water shield" membrane under it. This will seal around the screws and keep the total package dryer for a longer time frame. This type of roof panel is also thinner, probably 26 or 28 gauge material without a Kynar paint finish, which fades faster.
A standing seam roof is a true architectural grade product if you get it in 24gauge galvanized steel or .032 aluminum, with the kynar paint finish, which has a 20 year fade guarantee. The concealed fasteners help insure a watertight system. However you should still use thee ice and water membrane in all valleys. This will be four to five times more costly than architectural shingles and should last your lifetime.
Large hail will dent any metal roof.

A good quality architectural shingle roof will last 20-25 years.
Other than going for a specific look, I have no idea why people buy standing seam.
