Exactly. Someone can be swole and obese according to BMI. But how many of those guys have at least a bit of a gut? Based on my personal observations: A LOT. So is BMI really to blame in those situations?

But but but 5'10 NFL RB weighing 220 is obese according to bmi blah blah. Yes we all know. But they're pretty rare, just look around you.

Most guys just don't have that much muscle IF they're lean. Like I said some guys do naturally carry more. But they're usually the ones with some extra around the middle too.

Not that many at all.

Yes, again it does not take any variables into account whatsoever. It is a decent scale for women.

Had a friend that lives in Lebanon come home for the first time in years last week.
He said the thing that was most shocking was how fat everyone was. He never noticed it before living out of country for so long, but when he was walking through the airport when he landed he said it was glaringly obvious.
Just thought that was interesting. As a country, we are fat as shite. When I lived with a family in Paris in high school, we had small portions with several courses with each meal and a small drink. At first I was like "Whoa whoa whoa, I'm going to still be starving after this!", but I got used to it after a bit.

5'9" 175 lbs is either stocky as all hell, straight up fat, or if lean a body builder body type. So I'd say your example actually supports BMI. Most people don't ever touch a weight.
I am the definition of an average athletic build at that height and weight.

We do eat very large portions when compared to the rest of the world. I started to portion control myself a few years ago. It sucked at first but when you adjust you realize that you were over eating most of the time.

So innumerable variables are not considered. You can see how that smells like bullshite right? (And I don't know if it is)
The 30 isn't bullshite, though, Fox. The insurance companies set that and they have the only $kin in the game that counts. Over 30, the risk for diabetes, heart disease, even cancer, start to amp up. All weight isn't the same, but weight is weight. Your heart doesn't discriminate between fat and muscle when you're toting it around. In fact, muscle can be more of a load on the cardiovascular system - although you get far more of a return from the muscle. Ditto for joints. Your knees and ankles DGAF if the 230 they're carrying is fat around the middle, or huge pecs, biceps and quads. They get worn down just the same.
On the other hand, 2 six footers, identical weight of 245 - one is a professional body builder, while the other is a big, fat New Orleans accountant - the risk for diabetes, for example, is probably a lot higher for the latter than the former.
But, overall, that 30 line is money.
As for the rest - most American men balk at being called overweight - but most of us are. Women self-regulate more and that is why, IMHO, fewer women are in that overweight range - it's all or nothing - they're either in the range, or they let it all hang out. But, that's anecdotal.

So why does it highly correlate in population based studies with all the negative effects of obesity in men and women?

and the standard of living in Lebanon?
it's all relative. You can come back from North Korea and have the same observation
Standard of living is just as high in European countries that aren't fat like America.
And he was in a really nice area of Lebanon working at an upscale hospital run by a western company I believe.

Because the weights set for being "overweight" without taking into account outside variables are insanely low.

Why is everyone debating the accuracy of BMI? All you need to substantiate these results are functional eyes.
Posted on 1/27/15 at 1:32 pm to Ace Midnight
People can say what they want about BMI and in some cases it is BS. Of course on the OT everyone is jacked and benches 400 so everyone here is an exception to BMI but here's a fact: We are fat as hell and getting fatter. You don't need BMI to tell you that. Just look around.

And much of the rest of the world has infrastructure set up to encourage walking or cycling as the primary form of transportation. In this country, it can be difficult or dangerous to get around under your own power, even if you want to. Witness the threads bitching about cyclists. So errbody jumps in the car to go a few blocks. If people walked two or three miles a day in the course of their daily activity, a lot of the obesity problem would disappear.
