Sounds like the refs goofed then

Correct. That, or the equipment manager went in their room without their knowledge.

For the eleventy-eleventh time, the refs , per protocol, be it 1 or 2 or 3 of them, doesn't matter, are required, per the protocol, to stay in the room with the balls, not leave the room locked but unattended. In addition, there are cameras on just about every square inch at Gillette, particularly there would be one pointed at the door of the officials' room. (No way there would not be. The security of the refs themselves would dictate that.) So if ANY unauthorized person entered the refs room when the balls were there, two things would have had to happen: (1) the refs would have abandoned protocol and gone AWOL on oversight of the balls and (2) even if they did fail in that regard, there would still be video of the ballboy (presumably with a PATS-issued key ) letting himself INTO the improperly unattended room, and video of him LEAVING the room with the bags of ball, and then more video of him returning the bags of balls to the unattended room after releasing the air in the bathroom (and how would the ball boy know the AWOL refs would not come back while he was in there and discover the game balls had been heisted?). The risks involved would be mindblowing, and the ballboy would surely know his actions would be picked up by the security cameras.

I spell that scenario l-u-d-i-c-r-o-u-s !

I agree, it looks like the refs def screwed up in letting someone take the balls out of their sight. I have not seen anything that suggests this though,
