Too much waste within universities

He could probably convince a lot of the over 65 crowd of that to be honest

For a second there I thought it said "athletic". I'd have been pissed.

First of all, you're kind of right.
That being said, anyone who talking shite in this thread and other like it and turn around and blame our government cutting back are fricking morons.(Not saying you did, just pointing it out)
More importantly, Louisiana has a terrible problem of diversifying it's economy. So yes, now is the time to boost education so this state is so tied any one industry.

Nope, never even seen the outside of a refinery

Louisiana Department of Transportation will take a significant hit to its employment ranks. Look for the DOT to take a 50% reduction in its staffing in Baton Rouge. Could be as high as 65% if the oil stays at the same levels.

I've seen both the inside of several refineries and a Master's seminar class.
When I worked at Valero I literally "worked" 4-5 hours per day. Chevron in Pascagoula was even worse. So much waste.

if they get rid of some of the ridiculous higher up salaries in the state government, I'm sure that would help out a bunch.
Guys retire at their high paying position, then get brought back as a WAE (work as needed) at a salary that is lower, but they are just supplementing their retirement at that point...with stupid high salaries

Waste on our side is directly related to government regulations and safety procedures due to attorneys

how much of the problem would be solved if they eliminated TOPS? i really hate how they keep taking money from LSU. They should just leave open SLU, LSU, Nicholls, LA Tech, and ULL. shut down the rest

The DMV, however, is about to stop doing 3rd party testing. Road tests for first time licensing will be done by independent companies.

Big Oil and other industries are taking a haircut, it's time Big Education got a little trim as well. Be prepared for apocalyptic pronouncements on how cutting funding to higher education will lead to death, disease and war.

how much of the problem would be solved if they eliminated TOPS?
167 million in 2012.
1.56 billion over 13 years.
I think TOPS and the like is one of the worst things to happen to higher ed. It allows people to go to college who shouldn't or might not otherwise go. I firmly believe that college should be treated as a privilege, not a right. We need more selectivity.
ETA: "The scholarship program --which covers tuition and sometimes other expenses for those who receive it -- is estimated to cost the state $250 million next year and $387 million by the 2018-2019 school term"
There ya go...get rid of a couple university and cut TOPS.

I think the state should put an emergency, temporary 10 cent tax on gas to off-set the decline in revenue. Make it contingent with a certain price of gas, say as long as gas stays below 2.10 per gallon, there is a 10 cent tax (for example) - I realize that is an oversimplification, but thats my idea.
