What Are the Benefits Of a Concealed Carry Permit?

I know you can openly carry a pistol in a vehicle in Louisiana. What happens if you have a pistol in your center console w/o a CC license? It's also illegal to have a pistol on you (hidden) w/o a CC license? I'm trying to figure if I want to go through the trouble of getting a CC license or not.

Concealed carry permit allows you to carry a firearm concealed on your person.
In Louisiana you can carry a weapon inside of your vehicle in any location within the vehicle that you like with or without a conceal carry permit. The CC permit has no bearing on carrying in a vehicle.

Yea vehicle is extension of your home. CC allows you just carry on your person. It's also nice that when you purchase firearms it's streamlined if you show a firearms permit, at least in MS where I reside.

Some states, like Alabama, do not allow you to have a loaded pistol in your vehicle, however, if you have a concealed carry license, you can do so.

Not exactly. Defending yourself in your home carries much more legal defense assurance than out in public or in your car. But it is contained inside your property.
In LA you can have your handgun anywhere in your car as previously stated. In some states like AL, you must have some kind of permit to keep your ammo with your gun in your car. If you have a permit from a state that is respected in the other state (AKA reciprocity) then you can skirt past this. I see this as being the best benefit of a CC license. No need to worry about having to unload your pistol when crossing particular state borders. Here are the states that respect LA permits:

I can't figure out what you're trying to say.
Bapple's post is correct about who can and cannot possess loaded handguns in vehicles while in Alabama.

What are the benefits of a CHP? Well, you still can't open carry in a restaurant which serves alcohol so having the CHP gives you the option of pulling your jacket or shirt over your pistol as you walk into a place like the Outback or Logans.

I think this may have changed for Police Officers lately, or maybe there was some legislation introduced. Dawg or bapple probably know.

Skip background check when buying a new gun (in some states).

That reciprocity map, and several others I have seen, say that New Mexico does not honor Louisiana permits. However, according the the New Mexico Website, they do recognize our permits. LINK
New Mexico, unlike Louisiana, does not allow a person to carry more than one concealed gun.

Contrary to what State Police and other State officials were telling people, the Federal Law Enforcement Ofiicer Safety Act(LEOSA) preempted State Law and allowed off duty police officers to carry in a bar. The Louisiana Concealed Carry Statute allowed CC permit holders to carry in a restaurant that serves alcohol. This past year, State laws were amended to make it clear to everyone.

Yep. That La state police map hasn't been updated in a few years. New Mexico is good to go.

Just carried in New Mexico. Never even thought to check. One of the more careless things I've ever done. Glad I would have been good anyways.

Neither can I. That statute is virtually the Federal equivalent of the Alabama law. The weapon must not be loaded, and neither the weapon or the ammunition readily accessable from the passenger compartment. Get a CCL and it is not an issue.

This is what I was taught,, but to very much use common sense about it.
In other words, if I want to go get mexxycun food and there are margy ritas being served in there, no problem. But, if I go there to sit at the bar and suck on coronas, I should not have anything in my pocket. Again, common sense, cause there is usually a difference between "bar" and restaurant settings, IMO.

Thanks for that info.

What Coach posted is correct. You can carry concealed in restaurants that have a class "R" liquor permit (in addition to their Class A liquor license). This encompasses virtually all restaurants and excludes virtually all bars/lounges/honky tonks.
You cannot exceed a blood alcohol content (BAC) of over .05% and still carry legally. (For comparison, the DWI threshold is .08%).
In reality (practicality), folks shouldn't be drinking at all if they're gonna carry.
