I thought Daytona 500 meant 500 laps, no?

I like nascar, I've never understood the appeal of watching two people hit a ball over a net back and forth.( tennis)

I don't watch the sport. How am I supposed to intrinsically know what the 500 meant? It seems like an infinity loop the few times I saw it on TV at a sports bar.

Only a NASCAR fan would call someone a dumbass for not knowing about NASCAR.

Don't take it to heart Leon. These rednecks are fricking brutal when it comes to defending other trash.

If you don't know anything about nascar, then get the frick out of the thread. Easy enough

The numbers mean miles, although the Bristol 500 is 500 laps.

ETA: what he said up there ^^. Tracks of a mile in length or more are based on miles (Daytona 500, Brickyard 400, etc.) Depending on the size of the track, the number of laps to make up the miles will vary (200 laps at Daytona gives you 500 miles while 325 laps at Atlanta give you 500).
Short tracks (less than a mile) are based on number of laps - Bristol 500, Martinsville 500, Richmond 400. The actual distance varies based on the track size (Martinsville and Bristol are half miles so 500 laps is only 250 miles; actually a little more at Bristol because it is a little more than a half mile).
A couple of races (the two road courses and Phoenix) are listed as kilometer races. For example, the Phonix race is the Camping World 500, but is 312 laps on a 1 mile track, and 312 miles = 500 kilometers.

I posted that and then realized all of the short tracks are that way.

Went to Miami race in November. You get a real appreciation for how damn terrifying racing at that speed is.

This is especially ironic coming from a poster with your screen name
And it's not often a black dude like me gets called a redneck, so thanks for the laugh

I always forget about these.
