Historic moment: Power Five athletes will be paid beyond the traditional scholarship up to federally determined actual cost of attendance.
The vote was 79-1, with the lone objection coming from an ACC school.

They are already paying their room and board. What else is there?

Gotta pay for Raising Canes, beer and tattoos bro.

The idea that these players don't get enough funds to live is laughable. Maybe at the smaller schools but definitely not at the power 5 conference schools

The players are going to blow this money on stupid shite, then complain that their "pay" (and scholarships) aren't enough.
Grown arse men in the NFL go broke with millions. What do you think these young kids are gonna do with the money they get?

See that's a limited perspective. The cost of attending college is not just limited to room and board. You have to factor in food expenses, gas, various school supplies, etc.
This is a good move, though I don't see any scenario that would truly pay the athletes (football mostly) what they were worth to the University as a whole.

Most of the full ride scholarships include meal plans, on campus housing (which means they don't need gas) and books.
ETA: I understand that there is still a difference but I don't think it will be that much. Unfortunately, for some athletic programs that are already in the red as it is, this could lead to more non revenue sports being cut.

Believe it or not there are college students that can make it through college without cars

Only one of these things isn't covered, gas.
You can't tell me that these guys can't get food or school supplies with their scholarships on campus.
Having to stay on campus for all of these things is less than ideal, but it's a choice they made on their way to becoming millionaires. Small price to pay for world class training, facilities and coaching to help you earn 7 figures a year at age 20-22. Poor kids
And don't sit there and act like these guys are starving and walking around without shoes. They are being taken care of.

I don't understand why people are so against athletes getting some sort of monetary assistance above and beyond a scholarship. These guys aren't allowed to have part time jobs like some of us has in college to supplement income, and many of them come from impoverished families.
You guys are spending thousands on team gear, obsessing over these athletes, and yet you don't want them to get a little more financial help because of what?

Here's to the pipe dream that the amount of $$ sent home to help family >>> amount of $$ used to buy video games, tats and rims.

Funny, I don't recall getting a lot of the privileges they enjoy either.

Because it will never be enough. Give the kids a $1500 stipend, they will say they need $3000. Give them that, they'll say they need $10,000.
What are they going to buy that they aren't already getting?

It's a university with sports teams, not sports teams with a university
