Does everyone here use badger hair?
Anyone use a pre shave oil?

I actually use a nice synthetic brush. I also use pre-shave cream. Never given oil a shot though.

I saw you talked about cold water shaving earlier in the thread.
shite is awesome, I won't use hot water again.

I read about it on r/wicked_edge. Glad I could help you out.

I use an Omega 48 boar. They're about $10 on Amazon, and huge.

I'm intrigued by this shaving method. But it does seem somewhat time consuming. How would y'all compare the time involved vs. a regular shaving cream and razor shave?
Posted on 1/16/15 at 11:59 pm to Zappas Stache
I only spend maybe 5 minutes or so shaving.
Posted on 1/17/15 at 12:00 am to Zappas Stache
Initially, it takes a while. Like 30 minutes. It takes me about 17 now. I can do 10 in a hurry, maybe even a bit faster, but I really enjoy the process, so I like to take my time. It's like starting off every day with a spa treatment for your face.
Prep takes longer (lathering the shaving cream), and most people make three passes shaving. Obviously, both of those add time.

I'm in a situation where I don't have to shave every day - so, there is that. I only shave 3 or 4 times a week. But, the time spent is well worth it, in my opinion. I dreaded shaving before with the crazy chemical soap and the little jagged "razors" - just little tiny slivers of metal supported by a $5 plastic scaffolding.

No reason to use anything , IMO - you can get the starters in the $30 or $40 range and you'll get at least 3 years out of those. By the time you spend $70 to $120 on your second (or third) brush - that's a 10 year investment.
I don't care for the synthetics, but some people do.

Is this the new fricking hipster thing? Had to get rid of the neck beards?

I bought a sandalwood soap, and I hated the smell. I had heard people like it.
Yeah - I had used the Col Conk sandalwood hard soap. It had a mild aroma. But, I'm all about the Proraso Red (Sandalwood) now after changing from Proraso Green.
I started with soap just to try it, but cream is just easier for me.
I'm currently using an EJ DE89 with Gillette 7 O'Clock Yellows (Russian) and I don't think I can get any smoother - a little unforgiving coming from a Merkur 34C with the plain Green (Indian) 7 O'Clocks - which was my first regular setup after the sampler.

Pretty much my situation. Work from home and for myself.

My wife has me using the kiss me face and supposedly they dont use the bad chemicals.
From the other responses, it does seem like a luxury as far as time is concerned. And I have always had the zappa stache....so I need a small razor to be able to see to shave against the stache and goatee. The triple bladed things are no bueno. It looks like the cartridge things you guys use would work well.

It takes me about 15 minutes to shave and I do a bbs shave. Mitchell's Wool Fat soap or CO Bigelow in a tube is very slick. I had the long handle Merkur but, after two years of use, the handle post pulled out of the head ! That's the part the handle screws on to. I read about that happening to others so beware. I have the merkur adjustable now. I like experimenting with blade sample packs and have found Feather too sharp for me.

I use a early 40's super speed that traveled the Pacific with my grandfather during WW2. My wife got it from my grandmother and had it replated as an anniversary gift.
That and a tube of Cremo Creme from Wal-Mart work just fine in the shower. I have tried more expensive shaving cremes but they worked no better.
+ 1 on the Pinauds, bay rum is the best. Reminds me of an old downtown barbershop

To me it depends on if you are working around facial hair. When I'm not rocking the beard and I can just shave everything and not worry about keeping a good line I can get 3 passes in 5-7 mins. Depends on if it's been 2days or more too since last shave.

It takes me almost the exact same amount of time to shave but I do not normally use a brush/soap.

I think it is a matter of procedure. If you normally shave first, you can start soaking the brush and do a couple of other things (i.e. brush your teeth, etc.) - I can still be done in about 20 minutes, unless I'm doing a full 3 passes, with buffing. Now, I have a fairly coarse beard - not only was it difficult/unpleasant shaving with the cartridges - I rarely got even a "B" grade shave. In fact, my first half dozen wet shaves were comparable to or better than the 10 best twin/triple/quatro/octo, etc. cartridge shaves over the previous 25 years.
As an added bonus, the shave still looks/feels okay 10 to 12 hours later, so I can shave the night before in all but a handful of circumstances (I shave in the morning if I'm going to be in uniform, for example).

Pics?? Had to be said. Kiss my face is awesome. I have the key lime now. They nailed the smell. You could prank someone and cover a whole pie with it. They wouldn't know by smell, but taste.
And nothing will get lines of a stache of goatee like a single blade like a DE or a straight if you want to go all out.
Time is a factor starting out. You don't want to rush or be rushed. I can get it done now in 15 mins.

Is proraso a good starter when switching to the higher end creams?
Red, white, or green?
Anybody sell it in BR?
