he decided to CGI the frick out of characters he would have put in prosthetics or costume in the original trilogy: Orcs, Goblins, Azog, Bolg, soldiers in the various armies...

This probably annoyed me the most.

I also hate the way the Elves are portrayed. They're stuck up, way, way too regal, sanctimonious and dull.

Yeah, with a few exceptions, in the books elves are total douchebags, especially the royalty.

I was very underwhelmed, especially by the third movie. I was holding out hope for the third to settle some of my reservations, but it left me feeling more disappointed. It seems like it isn't a popular opinion from what I've heard, but I agree with you that I liked the first the best. I actually thought that the first movie was really promising for the rest, and I didn't have much if any problems with the silly action sequences. It fit the tone as I thought it was supposed to be.

Taken by themselves and not being compared with the books the movies were probably a 4/10 for me. Solidly entertaining but not something that I care if I ever see again. At the end of the day, I feel like I really just saw them because I felt an obligation to my childhood.

what happened to the Arkenstone? last we saw of it, Bard had it in his hands. Yet no mention of it after that... the heart of Erebor which was built up over 3 films. After Thorin dies, there's no funeral, and no discussion of who becomes king under the mountain, and no discussion of what happened to all that gold everyone was so worried about.

Those were some of my biggest complaints as well.

I thought they were all pretty good movies, but not nearly as good as LOTR. I felt that the first was the weakest myself. The silly mountain trolls, goblin king and the escape from the goblins were just meh to me. I think the second was the best b/c of Smaug..

Really? I thought the elves were spot on in the movies. They were viewed almost as godly figures. Cause they kinda were. They were the first race to walk Middle Earth. The first Children of Illuvatar. Immortal, fair, wise. The only race granted privilege to live with the Vala and Maia in Valinor. Not saying that the Ainur didn't love the other races of Middle Earth. But the elves were special.

The elves were special, but his description of them also being joyous, whimsical, and full of life is also accurate. They didn't have the same gravitas and air of superiority that they have in the movies. At least that's how they were in the Hobbit. In the book when Bilbo visited the vale I'm pretty sure that's how he described them. They were supposed to be a lot of fun and interesting. When the group first sees the wood elves they are supposed to be having a party around a fire.

Oh I'm not disagreeing. I think they had some lighthearted moments in the movies (not so much in The Hobbit). But their other characteristics I found to be pretty accurate. They were very regal and graceful, especially the Eldar. They are the closest in kin to the Ainur. A lot of their "parties" weren't portrayed in the films. But I can understand why.

I guess it's just subjective interpretation.

I also agree with the 1st one being the best, which is the minority opinion on this board I think. I

So what's the majority opinion? I watched the first one, but found it so underwhelming compared to LotR -- not terrible, just not something I really cared to watch again -- that I have yet to bother watching the other two. Do most people feel those are better? Are they worth going ahead and watching if I found the first one underwhelming?

It's a pity I wasn't more excited about the movie. The Hobbit was the 2nd "real" book I ever read.

I'd rate it 1, 2, 3

The first one was the best in my opinion mainly because the Gollum scene was flawless. The scenes in Bag End were also pretty awesome.

The second one is second mainly for the Smaug scenes. The rest was just "pretty good" with a few "pretty bad" parts thrown in.

The third movie last because the complete failure to tie up a lot of loose ends (already discussed in the thread). The battles were nowhere near as good as LOTR. Lots of obvious CGI (well done....just obvious). I did, however, think the fight between Legolas and Bolg to be very badass. The opening scene with Smaug was excellent. And although it was brief, the council driving Sauron from Dol Guldur gave me a nerd orgasm. I was still thoroughly entertained. It was just the poorest of the three for me.

The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings have totally different tones. I've always looked at it as though Bilbo was telling the story in the Hobbit. Going back to my elf argument, he perceived them as more joyous and lighthearted. And they were during that time. But in the LOTR, they were more serious because of the darkness hanging over middle earth, they sensed their time in ME diminishing, etc.
