Well, we talked about it so here it is. The challenge is simple; cheapest rocket to successfully land on the Mun. No return trip. Challenge will go from Monday through Wednesday, so 3 days. Sandbox mode. No mods. Post pics of your mission and a rocket price.
Happy flying!

There's several long threads on here about the game, a quick search will help you out a lot. There's some solid advice in them and this thread won't get hijacked.

No mods for this first one. It's only the Mun.

Mechjeb is way too much a cheat engine for this easy mission.
Wish I could play in this one, but left all my computers at home. Stupid wedding...

I'm kinda proud of my first attempt, now to shave some more cost off of it.

Bump. Just completed the challenge. Will post pictures shortly.

no mechjeb?
Mechjeb=optimal trajectories and fuel consumption.

Here's mine.
My rocket in the VAB. Ended up costing 12,815
On the launch pad
Solid rocket boosters gone.
Burning the last of the fuel in the second stage trying to get in orbit
Second stage gone. The lander will take us the rest of the way (hopefully)
Lander was able to finish getting us in orbit around Kerbin
Our planned burn to the Mun
Cool shot of Kerbin's deserts before I did the maneuver
And we're off
Got an encounter
Dark side of the Mun. About to burn retrograde and into a stable orbit
In a stable orbit, then I gently brought the craft down out of orbit. Descending here.
Just another picture I wanted to take without the nodes.
Coming down fast. Burning a lot of fuel
Slowing down
Landing gear is down
Can see the lander's shadow now
And touch down. Had just enough fuel to land safely.
Got Jeb out of the shuttle to plant the flag. He seems excited.
Fin. Would like to do another one sometime guys

Awesome job, you got me beat by a good bit, I'll post mine later tonight. I tried something different and it ended up not being as cost saving as I thought it might be.

Might I propose this be made into a weekly thing?
3 days is kinda fast and it makes it easier to come up with a schedule for new ones

I'd be ok with this. Work and all kinds of stuff can cause disruptions.

Yeah, a week does sound good. This one was so easy though, I didn't think a whole week was necessary. I also wanted to see how much interest this would get, but I'll work on new challenges every week.

I built the rocket for just under $5000. A rocket just had to land safely on the Mun! If I had to move a Kerbal, I could do it, I'd just put a seat on top of the RCS globe.
On the launchpad.
Dropping the solid booster that helped me get into space...with such a light payload and all.
This rocket gets me at a level that I can sustain this orbit for some time, until I need to burn to the Mun.
Here's my encounter.
Here's my burn, I've dropped that engine and have the puttering little engine with small fuel tank now.
This is the second time I attempted this mission, the first one failed because I ran out of power and couldn't turn my ship, and ended up having my butt to Sol the entire way until I crashed into the Mun. This time, I made sure to stay pointed as to not lose power. I adjusted every now and then as I sped the game up. I don't think playing with saves is sportmanlike, so I did the whole mission over from launch.
Mun's got me in its gravity field, not I just have to burn so I'll fall towards it, on the sunny side! I had to align my ship before I went behind Mun so I'd get that light from Sol.
Burned and now we just wait.
Falling towards the big Mun crater.
Getting closer to the surface, time to slow down to 100 m/s. Hope I have enough fuel!
Got that speed way down, there's the shadow! Looks like uneven terrain. That never stopped me before!
Landed with lots of fuel in the tank. It helps to be light!
I noticed when I turned off the SAS I would start to lean down the hill. I would always be in the sunlight here, never really had to turn it off, so it's a WIN.
I decided to take off again and go explore. Found a flat area and skipped around a bit...but crashed.
I didn't get a picture of that.
