They run the tests in a completely controlled environment inside so they can get optimum conditions. The numbers are never real world numbers, but just a number that is possible if all conditions are perfect.

It's never an average, just a max



Eta: I haven't ever checked my mileage, but I am on this tank. Expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of 10mpg mixed city/highway

And it's bullshite.

If I post a horsepower number that's off by 25% my arse is going to get laughed out of the industry. These goons just slap whatever kind of fairy tale number they want on the sticker and tell you you're driving wrong when you don't get it.

Automobile customers are not demanding enough and the manufacturers know it.
