Congrats Toyota, you took what was one of the best looking trucks on the road and completely fricked up. Job well done.

I just don't see the big change that you're seeing.

Toyota has not updated their engines in a while. Instead of investing in internal combustion engines they invested in hybrids and now hydrogen fuel cells. Meanwhile others have passed them up by making their engines more powerful AND fuel efficient. Don't get me wrong, I think Toyota vehicles are bullet proof, just behind the times.
The new Tacoma will have a different engine. I'd guess either the dual VVTI that's in the new 4runners or (most likely) a version of the 3.5 V6

The eyes man. The eyes. They look like the new Jeep Cherokee (not the grand), which is ugly as sin.

Bump...anyone seen the reveal today? Looks much improved and looks better to me than the pics did. Thoughts?

I read a short article in a 4WD magazine a couple of weeks ago that was called "Bring back the Mini's" and it is spot on how I feel about it. Basically it said that all of the "compact" sized pickups these days are what the old full sized trucks used to be. 4 doors, 6 foot bed, etc. I know most of us like the addition of a backseat, but if someone put out a reliable 4WD compact pickup then they would sell like crazy. Think of the old S10, Dakota, Ranger, original Tacomas. Those were all over the school parking lot in high school. We wheeled them like crazy, they rarely gave us any trouble. Edit: it also talked about MSRP. The 2015 Tacoma starts at $21k, but decently equipped it is closer to $30k.

I'll look at them. I have no need for a full size truck. But I was hoping they would get back to the 1st gen Tacoma in terms of size and styling. I just want an extended cab, 4x4. I could care less about 4 doors, backup cameras, etc.

Now THATS some funnit chit right there.

Really? Backup cameras are amazing. The fact that the screen is in the mirror on Tacomas really makes it perfect. I can back my Tacoma into a spot in a quarter of the time it takes someone to pull a Tahoe in normally, and I'm always within the lines.

After letting it sink in for a few days, I'm still not a huge fan of this new redesign. It looks like a hastily thrown together front clip was bolted onto the old truck, which actually looked more cohesive.
I think the larger Tundra as well as the new Colorado and new Frontier will eat into Tacoma sales, especially if Toyota doesn't offer more fuel efficient engines.

My loaded 04 4wd with every option was $24k. My 99 single cab 5spd 4wd with the A/C option was $15k.
Base model now is $21k? Nobody should buy them for that price. I think I might pay $18k for a base, but no higher. Couldn't bring myself to spend $30k on a Tacoma either, that's just wrong

Yea, in 07 it was cheaper for me to buy my single cab F150 stx over the base model, black bumper, 4cyl, manual trans, hand crank windows prerunner ext cab tacoma. The F150, had power windows and locks, auto trans, more power, bigger bed and basically the same cab space. No-brainer.
They're too proud of those things.
That said, I just looked at pics on the toyota website. I like the way they look, much better than the hideous canyon/colorado update.

Agreed.
Why pay more for half the truck with less options.

Tacoma sales are actually up since the Colorado was introduced.
Toyota is using the 3.5L engine running the Atkinson cycle and an all new 6 speed auto. It will make more power and have better fuel efficiency than the current Tacoma.
