Hydrogen Peroxide from a hair supply shop. It's supposedly a higher concentration than medicinal stuff.

I boiled it in an old pot that from now on will only be used for this. I have not whitened it yet

Nice job. I always used dental tools to get out as much of the flesh as possible before and after boiling. Be sure and add about a cup of borax to your boil water the next time if you didn't do it this time. The borax acts as a preservative and will help to keep the teeth from cracking during the boil. Gotta be real careful with those bones along the nose. They're very fragile. You can soak the skull portion in concentrated hydrogen peroxide for a bleaching effect to get rid of some of the yellow, or you can wrap the horns in a rag for ultraviolet protection and let the sun bleach the skull, but this takes time. I always airbrushed the skull. It's quicker and easier. Never had any customer complaints.

I figger you've already found out that you hafta remove eyeballs, tongue, and all major flesh before you start boiling. Some folks forget to remove the brain before boiling. To access the brain, just make sure the uppermost portion of the spine is removed from the skull. This will reveal a hole where you can "dig" out the brain tissue. You can use a small spoon for this or...you can make a simple scoop out of a piece of 1/4" or 1/2" copper tubing. Just flatten out the end of the tubing and put a spoon like "bend" on it. Used a tool like this for years. Simple and effective. Don't worry if some of those fragile nose bones become "loose" after boiling and cleaning. This is normal. Just be careful that you don't break them. You can always spot glue them back into place with super glue. Just like Brylcream, "A Little Dab'll Do Ya". Or do you remember the old Brylcream commercials on TV? If not, ask Geauxt. I'm sure he'll remember. Good luck!

Good info. I boiled it with everything still there including the hide. I will remove the hide next time for sure. Not sure about the eyes and brains, I have a weak stomach.

Knew a doctor years ago that was in Pacific during WW. Had two jap skulls - said he put them in ant piles and kept adding honey until they had cleaned all meat from bone. They looked great. With all the fire ants we have in south La it might work

Really nice job. Have you seen the skull saw device used in Europe to make the skull mount flat to the plaque?
