can you name any of the female Olympic Gold Medal winners? (i'm assuming they'd have to be American)
Look up.

Diana Taurasi was WNBA Finals MVP
Another more deserving candidate.

Mikaela Shiffrin, U.S. skiier. Youngest Alpine slalom Olympic champion in history. She wasn't yet 19, and beat every other elite slalom skiier in the world in the sport's most prominent event.
She's young, American and at an unprecedented age, beat the world's best. I think she's more deserving.

Her or the UF pitcher are my two choices.

see, this is all i was asking for. another few names.
great lists, and a ton of deserving people. you can make an argument for a few of the gold medal winners, but nobody won multiple medals, from what i saw. i have no horse in this race, so i really don't care.

For the record, the runner up was Lauren Hill (the basketball player with brain cancer) and third place was Serena Williams.

The ice dancer chick did, but that's barely even a sport.

And all I had to do was google "sochi gold medalists," "2014 women's grand slam winners," "2014 women's college world series" and "2014 women's basketball all americans" to find a dozen more worthy candidates. You'd have thought the JOURNALISTS at the Associated freaking Press would have done that too instead of just sitting around a table and saying "who was that little girl who pitched in those Little League games? That was cool. Let's give it to her"--which was apparently what they did.

I can at least concede that Davis was the beneficiary of a down year in female sports, and therefore her selection is not as far out of left field as she otherwise should have been. Still, the Olympic champions are far more deserving in my mind than Davis could ever be.

By "down year," I assume you meant "unmarketable."
Posted on 12/29/14 at 2:36 pm to lsutigers1992
probably a better term, yes.

By that same rationale, you could argue that Johnny Douchebag was the AP Male Athlete of the Year. He was drafted in the first round, was an NFL starting quarterback, and nobody "trended" and stole the headlines more than him!

Well I'm with you on Davis being the wrong choice, so you're preaching to the choir here.

Google 2014 Sochi Women's skiing, or figure skating
The fact that we have to google it to know any of the names tells me the AP made the right call.

Just shows how dumb womens sports are, besides MMA and even that is way worse than the mens. Ronda Rousey should have won.

that's even worse...

I forgot. The award is called "AP Most Searched and Most Popular Female Athlete of the Year." You're right.
It really sucks that we live in a society where people think "trending" and "newsworthy" are synonymous.
People can win awards even if they are not celebrities.

17 year old katie ledecky broke 3 world records in swimming, two of the twice... so 5 wr performances in a year doesn't even get you top 3. 5 gold medals at pan pacs too.
Posted on 12/29/14 at 2:58 pm to ehole
But I had to google her so she doesn't deserve it.
Should have had cancer if she wanted to be in the top 3.
