re: I can't figure out people who hate Christmas

I can't stand the gift giving portion of Christmas. My wife, sister in law, sister, mom all thrown in to this bullshite huff about getting people gifts and buying gifts "if someone will be there" and "what if this person doesn't get a gift". It's fricking ridiculous and it costs me a fortune every year.
I just try to focus on my kid's Christmas and get through it. I'm very happy when it's over because of all the rush.

Sounds to me like some of boys life just sucks in general.
Can't help you there.

More or less incorrect. There is a strong normative influence. Failure to do so would have consequences.
I'm sure that sounded good in your head, but for all practical purposes it is wrong. In reality, I am more or less required to spend a couple hundred bucks on my family every year.

I agree the kids receiving of presents is most important.

Ignorance is bliss, I suppose. Am I right, TIGRLEE?

goddamn you suck so bad
you make a post trying to figure out why some people do not like Christmas
other posters try to give you some perspective and you hate on their lives
try leaving that little bubble of Bunkie every now and then

Yea, you wouldn't get gifts the next year, so you would actually win the war. You sound like a twat that would jump off of a bridge because that's what the norm is.

He does the same thing regarding Jarrett Lee. Still. 4 years later.

I'm an aethist but I love Christmas. The trees and decorations and holiday spirit, watching Christmas movies and buying/getting presents. Holiday dinner. I love the commercial/consumer Christmas, doesn't bother me about the religious aspects.
I think some people are just miserable.

Uh, no. Much more serious than that.

Have I not been questioning social norms throughout this thread? I'm the one saying "Hey, why is everybody jumping off the bridge?"
And here you are telling me I'm a "twat" for it. You sound immature and a little slow.

I don't live in bunkie nor have I ever lived there.
The perspective is that their lives suck in general.
Don't hate for me just stating the obvious.

Yeah this is bull shite. My parents REFUSE to give me any sort of list or suggestion as to what they might want. Then when asked, will say "I dont need anything, you dont have to get me anything." But if Christmas morning they got jack shite as everybody was opening gifts it would be awkward, and i would feel like a dick. Then on top of that when i do give them something they say "YOu didnt have to do that" YES I DID!!!
So every Decemeber im walking around the mall wanting to kill myself looking for some random piece of shite that my parents dont want or need so i dont feel like a scum bag haha.

5. Can be extremely depressing if you are alone
And the present pressure can really be hard if you're not able

That's what I'm seeing as well. Lee must live a pretty charmed life to be able to decide how much Internet strangers' lives suck. Perspective is a really good thing.

May have been mentioned but IMO #1 is probably people that grew up or live in dysfunctional and secular/materialist-focused families. Under those circumstances it's easy for Christmas to turn into a stress factory. Sad.

I don't hate Christmas, I'm indifferent to it. I'm not religious. I buy gifts for some of my immediate family and that's it. I expect no gifts from anyone. I don't put a tree or lights up..

To elaborate:
There are three ways to exert normative influence on a group of people.
1) The threat of sanction (i.e., punishment) - this could come in a variety of forms, including ostracizing deviants
2) The promise of incentives (i.e., you reward somebody for doing a certain thing)
3) The promotion of belief (i.e., you get people to believe that something is right)
Christmas, as a social institution, exerts strong normative influence on people. It works mostly through #3 (see, TIGRLEE). But it also gives the illusion of #2 while presenting a serious case of #1.

Get them a card. Sorry your parents are like that. Mine are good with a card and a bottle of wine.
