I'm looking to get one of the two to serve a "home base" for the house. I have a MBP that is primarily used for work and an iPad for leisure. I do a fair amount of photo and video editing. Very rarely game. Does anyone have experience with one or the other to make a reccomendation? TIA.

For all intents and purposes here, the cheapest iMac is a Mac Mini with an integrated monitor.

This particular iMac ($1100) has double the RAM but otherwise has identical specs to the cheapest Mac Mini ($499). But, cleverly, the Mac Mini's memory cannot be upgraded, and the iMac's can.

If you're doing video editing, you'll likely miss that 4GB of RAM.

So, then you have the next tier up Mac Mini for $699, which matches the iMac ($1100) in RAM and beats it in CPU power by a little over 20% in multi-threaded tasks. Then, consider that you can get a 21.5" 1080P IPS monitor (Aka the 21.5" iMac's screen specs)[link=( https://www.bestbuy.com/site/aoc-21-5-ips-led-hd-monitor-black/8163044.p?id=1218864514315&skuId=8163044)]for $119[/link].

The setup won't be as stylish, but you'd be getting a better Mac for over $250 less.

Once you reach the second cheapest iMac ($1,299), you have a CPU that beats even the $999 Mac Mini (but lacks the faster fusion drive found in the Mac Mini), and it just goes up from there with iMac hardware power and screen size (and resolution, and price).

I think he means upgrade the RAM at checkout when you purchase the Mac Mini. The Mac Mini can be configured for up to 16gb of RAM.

Here is some good info on the new Mac Mini's. I have a 2011 and love it, but if I had a choice between the 2014 Mini and iMac, I would pick the iMac every time.

Mac Mini RAM

All your questions are answered here.

The 2014 model isn't upgradeable, previous models are.
