My toddler has the flu. He had the flu shot but apparently has been hit with the other strain.

The doctor prescribed tamiflu but seemed really hesitant about it. In fact, he said, "I'm never sure what he (being the boss of the pediatric clinic I think) wants to do with toddlers and the flu, but in this case, he said to prescribe it."

He then told me that it could cause violent vomiting as a side effect and that we should stop giving it if that happens.

The pharmacist also said that he thought Tamiflu was a waste of money. That it would maybe stop the flu from lasting as long but wouldn't exactly curtail the symptoms as the flu ran its course.

So we didn't get the Tamiflu. Now my son is struggling to keep his fever below 103. Even after Motrin, Tylenol, and cool baths. He's drinking LOTS of fluids, which is good. But his fever and miserableness concerns me.

First off. I hope your kiddo gets better soon.

Why didn't you get the medicine? I don't think there's a miracle drug to get rid of it. It needs to run its course but if the medicine will shorten it, why wouldn't you give that a go?

This is more of the controversy with Tamiflu. Unable to say how effective it actually is.

Some people like having it simply for the peace of mind, but many see it as only effective if given right at the beginning of the illness.

You should've filled it.

Toddlers generally run higher fevers than adults. 103 is not too big a deal. Treat his symptoms and keep that tylenol and motion rotating every 3 hours.

P1 here... get it filled. If you have insurance, it should not be that expensive.. however if you do not have insurance is a tad bit over 100 bucks. Listen to the Pharmacy Manager! Drink plentttty of electrolytes too.

Tamiflu "might" lessen the symptoms as far as the upper respiratory problems a little bit and it "might" decrease the full duration of the symptoms by about 12 hours.

It will do absolutely nothing for the fever.

Tylenol, Ibuprofen, and good fluid intake. If the baby doesn't want food, make sure the fluid has calories (pedialyte, juice, milk).

This could last a week or more to some degree

Eta, NP in the ER who's seeing LOTS of flu these days. Had 4 so far today. From infant to 78 y/o

Keep giving the Motrin every 4-6 hours and fluids rolling. Gatorade, Pedialyte...keep him hydrated.

My two year old was put on Tamiflu within 12 hours of his first symptom two days ago. Today he is behaving like nothing bothers him and he has no fever.

103 is really high, you might want to go to an afterhours clinic.

In the future you might want to get a different doctor. Good luck and when in doubt go to the hospital.

Pretty much what we do for toddlers at work with the flu(they usually get admitted cause they are dehydrated and not drinking so need IV fluids and other supportive care). We also usually give them Tamiflu.

Is it too late?

The biggest issue here was the doctor. As someone already advised, I plan on finding a new one. He was OBVIOUSLY not wanting to prescribe it but threw in an excuse of some mythical "he" that set the policy for it to be prescribed. He did say that he didn't like prescribing it to 18 month olds because of the potential side effects and the general lack of certainty that it would do much for him.

But then when I asked the pharmacist his opinion, he too said it wasn't worth getting.

But the folks here (some of which I recognize from earlier posts where they claimed to be in the medical field) say to get it.

So confused.

Tamiflu, in most cases, will decrease both the severity and duration of symptoms, however, it is only effective if given within the first day or so after exhibiting symptoms.

You should have had the prescription filled.

Get it filled. We have filled so much Tamiflu susp for kids this season. It will help....but you should have started it by now to lessen the duration. Parents have not called me about vomiting after taking it and have never seen any documentation of that. Please watch the temp and hydration, hydration, hydration.

Btw, for all posters. The flu shot given this year may not help much. The strain of flu we are seeing is different than the shot. Louisiana so far has seen the most cases of the flu. Keep your hands washed and stay away from anyone with it. Its a mean case this year!!

Wasn't this the case like 3 years ago as well? I'll admit I'm not up to speed on the specifics but I was told by the nurse I was banging at the time that they essentially pick a strain, A or B, that they think will be predominate that year to use in vaccines. Is that essentially how it works?

Sorry for hijack.

Hope your kid gets well.

Yea, basically thats how it is done. Its never a exact science to what strain of flu spreads. Its always hit or miss!!
