Foie Gras

So I got a gift package from one of our vendors today and it had a box of "fine" chocolates, a bottle of champagne and a jar of foie gras.
I've vaguely heard of foie gras and know just enough to know that it is supposed to be pretty "fancy". For me a bottle of red wine and rib eye is about as good as it gets and I don't have much experience with "the finer tings".
My wife is coming to visit me (in a different country for work) for Christmas and was thinking since it will just be us two maybe we can enjoy the goodies from this care package on Christmas. Problem is I'm not sure how to prepare the foie gras, what it goes with, etc. I've seen several options on the internet but wondering if there were any good suggestions / experiences?
Thanks

My first thought is to simply grab some crackers and a butter knife.

I have no idea how to eat it. But I just read about it on wiki and I advise you to hurry up and eat it before the animal rights posters get here.

If you can take all of the foie gras out of the jar with it intacted, I would slice it about a 1/4in. thick and sear it really quickly in some butter or olive oil in a skillet. Then I would make some nice crunchy, garlicly bread and serve it on that.

Most likely what you have is pate de foie gras. There are some jarred whole lobes of foie gras available, but that is probably not what would go in a gift basket. But if so, congrats your vendor really likes you. (If it is a whole lobe, slice, score, sear)
So assuming it is pate de foie gras, and based on your limited experience with it, Id suggest not making it the star of the show.
You like rib eyes and red wine? Awesome place to start. Sear those rib eyes. While they cook, saute some mushrooms with shallots and butter. Have any stock? If so throw in a touch of that. Then swirl in the pate at the end. Taste it, if you like it spoon that sauce over the cooked steaks. Drink the red wine.
Or you can just smear the pate on top of a toasted piece of baguette and eat it as a snack while you wait for steaks to cook. Foie gras plays very well with sweet things, so a nice jam smeared on the bread or a sweet wine would be a good idea.
