In a word, accessibility. Golf has a steep learning curve and is expensive. If truly "public" (i.e. city) courses were better maintained I think the sport would start to come back.

Disc golf cheaper, more fun, less a-holes(or at least a different type) and beer/weed while playing.

Too much competition for white folks' money and leisure time.

Not replacing aging white golfers with minority young golfers fast enough.

It's a hot, sweaty, expensive waste of time.

We can only hope. It's a huge waste of land and water.

It's just getting back to normal and that's fine, the trash that came out when Tiger was popular made it not worth playing on the weekends

Society has become fast paced, and unless you're playing on a empty course with you or someone else, it's usually a 4-5 hour round.

1. Time: Most people have obligations to work and family that leave very little time for an activity that takes several hours each time. Has hunting suffered from this?

2. Money: Golf is an expensive hobby. Even if you are frugal, club membership or green fees are at least 100 dollars a month or more. Equipment is expensive.

3. Difficulty: The game is not easy to learn and maintaining skills requires practice. Most people, if they are honest, cannot break 90 even on a 6,000 yard course.

4. Marraige has changed from men working M-F while women stay home.
In those days, dad went to the club for his Saturday round and dinner was ready when he got home. Now, mom works too. Kids used to organize their own activities. Now it is all travel sports, rec sports leagues and lessons. It is hard to choose golf over family when your wife is working 40 a week too.

Full disclosure, I am semi-retired and now play at least 3 18 hole rounds most weeks and hit the range or putting green often. When I worked full time, before kids, I played several times a week after work. When kids came, I played infrequently and almost quit altogether.

Well my problem is you have to have three friends to play and I don't even like three people.

I didn't start playing golf until my mid-40's and - due to how terrible I was at it - would not have continued were it not for some friends who played scramble all the time, which allowed me to gradually improve without having to keep my own score. I've now been playing over 10 years and still am not any good. But, I love the game and will continue to play it. I think a lot more people would get an addiction to golf were they ever to start to play.

Having said the above, I can imagine how expensive it must be to maintain a golf course. Courses are closing all of the time because they cannot bring in enough income to pay the bills.

As more and more courses dry up, the green fees/ membership fees, etc. for those that stay open will likely become cost prohibitive for folks like me. Or, the still affordable courses will be so busy that it will be difficult to get a tee time.

I hope things turn around, but it does not look promising to me.
