Rambo first blood question

Why does the sheriff have it out for Rambo at the beginning? Is it bc Rambo is a Vietnam vet, or is it bc he's a long haired vagrant looking person? I've heard theories for both reasons.

Because He's a huge douche.

Didn't he think Rambo was "disrespecting the flag" or something because he was wearing a ratty looking jacket with the flag on it? Obviously, combined with his look, he just mistook him for a hippie and even said later he wasn't aware that he was a war hero.
Plus, the sheriff told him to GTFO of town and then watched as Rambo metaphorically gave him the bird and turned back into town as soon as he drove away the first time.
The sheriff didn't have anything against vets. IIRC, he was a decorated one, too.

It just confuses me bc back in the day vietnam vets were hated by a lot of folks. But then the sheriff mighta thought he was some hippie wearing a soldiers jacket. And then I also can't blame Rambo for feeling disrespected when all he wanted was a hot meal. He is the most decorated soldier of all time.

It was because he looked like a bum.

He didn't take kindly to the looks 'o him.

Read somewhere (IMDB maybe) that the sheriff is a Korean War vet and has a chip on his shoulder since they were basically ignored. I think there's a scene where you can see his medals in his office.

Power tripping small town cop and the apparent scumbag defied, even embarrassed him.

There is, there is a plaque behind him and it has I think three metals including the purple heart and I think bronze star.

I think he understood a slightly greater capacity for danger due to the Veteran thing - when you watch it closely, he thinks he's doing Rambo a solid - giving a little hop through the town. Smarter move would have been to just drive him to the next town and drop him off.
I bet Rambo wouldn't have walked back and would have eaten at the next town - Sheriff could've have spotted him a fiver to make sure.
But, no! frickin' Brian Dennehy had to be a bad cop.
I do think it was supposed to be symbolic of America's treatment of Vietnam vets - but I didn't detect any anti-veteran vibe from the sheriff - now the deputy in charge of getting him cleaned up - he was clearly taunting him with "soldier boy".
ETA: On a side note - Dennehy was a silent generation, but fairly late - born in 1938 (same as Pops Midnight) and a little too young to have actually been in the Korean War - he was also only 8 years older than Stallone. Stallone, being in the first boomer cohort, was the perfect age to have been in Vietnam - would have turned 19 the year heavy combat operations started (1965) and in his early/mid 20s at the peak of the fighting.
Dennehy enlisted in the USMC, serving 4 years fro 1959 to 1963. Stallone worked overseas, received student deferments and ultimately failed an Army physical. He was never drafted despite a high number. In fairness, he was flatfooted at 4 years of age (one of the reasons his mother put him in dance class) - and may never have been eligible to serve because of that.
In any event, vastly different IRL military experiences for the leading actors in this film.

No - it's firearm/commando/Vietnam Veteran porn, just set near Christmas time.
The only presents he delivered were pain.

Another great Brian Dennehy performance.
Right up there with his work as Wayne Gacy.

I agree - Sly was all over the place on this one - Dennehy and Crenna delivered the crucial acting performances in this film.

Yea, Crenna was great too.

The scene where Rambo is holed up in the tunnel, collecting himself fireside, and Troutman starts speaking to him over the radio is my favorite scene in that movie. Pretty intense in a cerebral way.
Also, the location they filmed this movie was perfect.

The sheriff bet on Apollo Creed and he looked a lot like Rocky.
