The House on Thursday approved a proposal to scrap the Air Force's recommendation to retire the A-10 close air support planes.
Adopted 300-114, the amendment to the 2015 defense appropriations bill offered by Reps. Ron Barber (D-Ariz.) and Candice Miller (R-Mich.) would prevent any elimination of the A-10, also known as the "Warthog," fleet.
Air Force officials have said that retiring the plane would save $4 billion. But supporters of the A-10 fleet argued that there is no equivalent plane ready to to provide troops with close air support.
"With what's happening in Iraq and the Middle East, eliminating the A-10s is the wrong move," Miller said during House floor debate.

The Army is ready to fly them if USAF does not want to.
However, USAF is never going to allow USA pilots to fly fixed-wing combat aircraft (except drones, of course.)

The ISIS mission is what this plane was built for. The need to send these guys and elevendy million rounds of ammo.

Some generals are gonna be pissed when their kickbacks get eliminated.

Shouldn't the recommendations from the military be solely about combat necessity and the legislative branch worry about the price tag?
Seems like that flip-flopped here.

Seriously, you are correct.

I didn't say "only" fixed-wing - that is one platform that Army Aviation would LOVE to make an exception...

I think the A-10 is a cool weapon but how is congress qualified to tell the Air Force what planes it needs??
The army is keeping its A-10's, right? And the army is the branch of service which knows when and where it will need close air support for its troops.
Bad move by congress, IMO.

USAF never let them have any - they can veto any fixed-wing combat aircraft the army wants to fly.
ETA: Russian - the solution is to let the Army fly A-10s. The USAF's ego will not let that happen (or has prevented it for almost 2 decades now) - USAF has tried to dump the platform on several occasions.

I am confused.
The Air Forces recommends to cut a plane. Congress says that they will not cut it.
That makes no sense, especially given the ever decreasing number of vets serving in Congress.
I wonder with Congressman's district produces the plane.

Maybe the most durable close-support airframe in the history of aviation. Can't believe they ever wanted to scrap it.

If they aren't needed why are they being deployed to Iraq?

As I understand it, generals revert back to children once they get stars in that they love to play with new toys. I think this is more of Congress telling them that they need to keep playing with the toys they already have. Of course, Ron Barbour's constituency has a vested interest in the survival of the A-10 at DMAFB.

The Army has zero A-10s, they are all Air Force.

The USAF isn't allowing it's own pilots to get enough fixed-wing time either.
