If you don't have an injury preventing you and still don't deadlift, you need to start. It will cause all other lifts to increase.
ETA
Start light. Work on your form so you don't hurt yourself.

I used to. now my arse crack extends halfway up my back from the scar from my back surgery.

I do, but I don't go as heavy as I normally would with other lifts

Its more about form than weights. I know people that do 6 plates total and their form is horrible. They always complain about their lower backs hurting for a week afterwards.
Good overall workout, but if you're new to it, you gotta accept the fact being "macho" about it can actually screw you over.

Nope. Not interested in packing on mass, just want to stay in shape. In my late 30s and mainly do bodyweight stuff and Dumbbells.

Exactly. Those cardio bunnies won't be impressed by you going too heavy and then crying like a girl.

dafuq? Is not even a mass exercise. It adds strength over your whole body.

Per broscience, dead lifting causes an increase in testosterone production.
I just want to stay reasonably strong, but don't want a herniated lumbar disc.

I deadlift but stop about half way down. I read that this was best technique in a magazine

I have a bad knee so I've had to scale back on the weight but yes. It's one of if not the best overall exercise you can do

Agreed. I try and max out at least 2x/week on deadlifts.

I do, but I'm much more careful on the weight after I tweaked something and got some pretty bad sciatica.
If you can't keep your chest up, you're lifting too much.

Yes. Don't go heavy, not worth it - I try to focus on the form.

So 3 plates per side? If that makes their backs hurt, they need to stick to crossfit
