Waiver wire etiquette

Regular season is done. 14 team league and top 6 are in the playoffs, teams 7-14 in a consulation bracket that has no payout (except bragging rights I guess).
I thought there was an unwritten rule that people not in the playoffs stay off the waiver wire. I sent a message on the message board saying this (commissioner is good at collecting $ and being a general hardass, but not well versed in the smaller nuisances of fantasy football).
Of course, this week there are multiple pickups off the WW by teams not in the playoffs.
Do I have a legitimate gripe or not?

No, you do not have a legitimate gripe. It's a fair play for them to play it until the end of the season. You might have a legitimate gripe if players were being traded from non playoff teams to playoff teams as that might suggest collusion.

I don't think so.

Agree 100% especially if they're just playing for bragging rights in a money league. In my league our commissioner manually sets the match-ups so the non-playoff teams are left with byes.
Which is another good reason to make each add/drop transaction worth something like $1-2 dollars. Keeps the non-playoff teams from picking up players and spending money

So they should just roll over and quit? Sounds like you're being a punk arse whiner.

If they're in the playoffs this week and have nothing to play for then yes. The non-playoff teams season is overs. They're shouldn't be a "Loser's Bracket" unless there's a last place penalty. That should go by regular season record anyway.
Just imagine the 2-11 team picking up Latavius Murray this week and the playoffs started tomorrow. He's just hurting the league and the remaining 6 teams in the playoffs.

Even if there is no chance of someone making their future situation any better, like better drafting position next year or a point high incentive, you still shouldn't quit.
FFLs for the most part have months of shite talking and prep behind them, and anyone who just stops giving a shite at the end of the season because of teh playoffs deserves to not be invited back.

The thing is, the season is over for them. The consulation bracket thing is just done automatically by the program and does not pay out anything nor count toward anything. It's not like they are "not trying" by starting guys on a bye week or something.

Bragging rights, just not wanting to finish in last, and just having fun is plenty enough reason to keep playing and making moves until the end. They paid money too, and it isn't only about finishing in the money for some people. It isn't for me. I just enjoy playing.
Chances are you had a chance to get whatever player they picked up before he ever even made it to the waivers last week. It just sounds like whining to me.

I'm actually ok with my team and it really didn't affect me, as I got the player I wanted. Just was wondering about general consensus regarding what I thought was an "unwritten rule".
In our league, the waiver order resets every week so last place is #1 in the pecking order, and first place is #14. It's not like some leagues where if you use a waiver pickup, you move to the back of the line.

Why should you have less competition for waiver claims? If your opponents are better situated than you are, that's your problem. Stop your whining.

We lock eliminated teams. There's no reason for an eliminated team to pick anyone up.

Maybe it's just me, but this sucks.

Exactly, giving eliminated teams a "bye" once the playoffs start is the simple solution to this.
Streaming QBs and defenses can play huge roles in the remaining 5 weeks in the season. ESPN and Yahoo have loser brackets which are basically participation awards for having a shitty season.

You have a right to be mad but not the reason you think
Posted on 11/26/14 at 10:44 pm to tzimme4
Meh, I've stocked up on handcuffs, defenses, and 2 extra QBs and I should be fine. There's really nothing on the WW except crapalicious defenses, third stringers, some very boom bust TEs, and Geno Smith

As long as the have match ups why should they stop? Sounds like you're just mad someone picked up someone you wanted.
Much better than the team in week 5 that stop setting his lineup for the rest of the year and has 3 guys injured.

I do the same in my league. Only teams in the playoffs can make moves once it starts.
