Ant hills without ants?

I have four or five ant hills outside by my mailbox. Today I went to pour some pesticides on them but all of them appear to be empty. Any reason for this?

Termites / subterranean termites.
Knock down the mound. If it's back in a few days, they are rebuilding the air ventilation shafts that cool their nest.
Termidor is good for killing nests. I have also experimented with Borax (20 mule team Boraxo) and water. It screws up their nervous system.
