I forget what it is called, but I think there is an effect where stupid people have a tendency to think that they are smarter than they really are probably because they are too stupid to understand real complexity and smarter people tend to think that they are stupider than they really are because they can see how much they really don't understand.

One of my favorite mantras that an old boss told me was, "You don't know what you don't know" and it stuck... I think you're right in that understanding the fact that you don't know certain things is a sign of true intelligence.

The Dunning-Kruger Effect. I was actually talking with my copywriter about this in regards to a client last week.

To sum it up, basically dumb people aren't smart enough to know they're dumb, whereas smart people underestimate their abilities because they think that stuff that is easy to them is easy for everyone, which it isn't.
