Will the Saints cut Morstead this offseason?

He's been a great punter for us for a while now. I started this thread in the offseason and was ripped apart for it.
His contract:
2015 - $3.4 million cap hit. Save $1.25 by cutting him
2016 - $4.45 million cap hit. Save $3.25 by cutting him
2017 - $4 million cap hit.
Is it worth paying the price of a solid contributor on offense or defense for a position that can be filled for the minimum?
For comparison:
Sproles
2014 - $2 million
2015 - $4 million
2016 - $4 million
Keenan Lewis
2014 - $3.35 million
2015 - $4.85 million
2016 - $7.3 million
Easily enough for a FA guard

I don't think so. They might ask him to restructure but he's a great punter.

I hope not. He's a weapon.

Needs to. That's too much.

Not really about that. He's great at NET punting
I just don't think a punter's value is equal to a key contributor on offense or defense.
The difference between our NET average at #3 and the the 15 team is 3 yards/punt
Then you have to factor in our offense. We have the least amount of punts in the NFL and are always near the lowest in the league

Issue is you save 1.25mil by cutting him, down a punter, and you need to then spend 420k on another punter that is rather unknown. You'd save only 800k, but sacrificing a solid punter for an unknown. There are better ways to make 800k. Next year is the better time to do it, not this.

We punt the least amount in the NFL and we're talking about 3-4 net yards difference, assuming the rookie we bring doesn't have a cannon.
We're talking about 9-12 yards a game difference or having that money to spend on oline or a pass threat

Are you sure about this?
Only the top 51 players count against the cap and we'll have several at $420k that don't count.
So we'd save $1.25 million by cutting him this year

Its an obvious choice that year.

Most overrated punter ever

True, but that is considering we don't have a 400-500k salary player on this team come next year.
Even at 1.25mil in savings, you lose 2.15mil in dead money. It just isn't as worthwhile when we lose more in dead money than savings.
For underperforming players, anything 1:1 or better is perfect (Hawthorne's case 3mil savings, 3mil dead), anything worse than 1:1 is not ideal (Grubbs' case 6.0mil dead, 3.6mil savings).
Cutting Grubbs next year saves us 7.3mil, but we lose 3.0mil, that is an ideal time. Perfect scenario too because solid guards like: Marshal Yanda (32 y/o in 2016), Alex Boone (29 y/o in 2016), and David DeCastro (26 y/o in 2016) hit the market. Don't have to spend 2 draft pick on guards when you can get a young vet like decastro.

That is the wrong way to look at it IMO. It is a sunk cost. So you'd have to ask yourself is that risk worth $1.25 million towards another player. I'd absolutely agree with you if he was going to go against the 51, which I highly doubt he would

True, which is why it is time to go away from our old philosophy. I still want an incredibly athletic rookie guard like Dallas has.
I think it would be

Restructure. Push it back for a few years. Revisit in 2018.

If the position of need is for Guard, they'll almost certainly go after the players in those positions now for restructuring. By asking Morstead to restructure for a need on the offensive line is the age-old analogy, "Robbing Peter to pay Paul". Now, if they were going after a kicker with a longer FG range, then I would say asking Morstead to restructure wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility. Typically GMs look at salaries categorically, ie. you move money from Special Teams to pay for a need on Special teams.
The real issue is we are paying big money for sub-par play at the Guard position. Honestly they need to target a Guard in the draft and possibly grab a FA from somewhere. Also they need to get a real Oline coach. This transition for Ingalls is clearly not working out. As far as the fate of Evans and Grubbs, one of them should go and the better of the two should be kept at a reduced rate. They've looked like oversized babies on roller skates getting pushed around all season.

I honestly don't think we should keep either one of them at this point. We have a chance to have a very young, athletic, and cheap offensive line next year.

Well they impact each other. The Saints offense is very good and does not punt the ball much. I'd much rather save $1-4 million a year for an offensive/defensive weapon that 10 yards/game punting.
Coaches don't like the unknown though and there is always a risk when you change it up

I'd be shocked if they draft 2 guards though. Especially with the needs on defense. We obviously need a second lock-down corner to complement Lewis on the other side. Linebacker has been woefully ignored for far too long in the draft by this FO. The last two games against run-heavy offenses have pretty much shown the entire league that all they have to do is borrow Les Miles' playbook in preparation for playing the Saints. We are looking like we will also need another NT with Bunkley showing his age. That doesn't even address the hole that Mark Ingram will leave on our running game after he leaves. Also Colston is probably done, so now we need a quality possession receiver.

So would I, but honestly I think that we should be looking to FA for defense unless we find an ILB we love. Luckily, guard is a position with plenty of options via the draft and FA without a huge curve

Which was more of the point to this thread. We're paying our punter starting RB money.
We're going to role with Khiry and PT next year and might draft someone late. Would love the luxury of rolling with a quick back
Anyways, I understand the reasons for keeping him, but that contract...woof

Do not discount the effect that a veteran can have on the interior line. You don't want a bunch of young-bloods in the middle of the line for Brees. A good defensive line who knows how to do a lot of stunts and twists will really reek havoc on a rookie interior. Look at Dallas last year, when their amazing Oline (this year) was cutting their teeth. It resulted in a potentially career-ending injury for Romo.
To me, Grubbs would be the best candidate based on what I've seen this year. Evans looks lethargic and running high in mileage this year.
