Just purchased MacBook air...please help with storage options

I decided to go the cheap route and got the 128 gb ssd. After I migrated photos and music I was down to about 33 gb of storage left. I am considering returning it and getting either the 256 or 512 storage options but they are both considerably more expensive. Ive been told just to store all my stuff on an external drive but I have never used one so I don't know what is all involved if I want to access pictures or music. Seems like a bigger hassle to me but maybe I'm misinformed. Any help would but appreciated.

My Air is not my primary computer so most of my pics and music are on an iMac and a rapidly filling 1 TB hard drive.
If your Air is your primary computer an external hard drive is pretty painless.
Just format it MAC Extended Journaled (it will likely come FAT 32 out of the box) and it will work better with the Mac.
You may want to look at your libraries and maybe just move one to the external if one is much larger (my photo library is very large compared to my iTunes). iPhoto and especially Aperture can handle this pretty easily. I think iTunes can be a little more problematic in this regard because of permissions with how many computers can access your iTunes account.
If you do a lot of video editing and move big files back and forth a Thunderbolt drive may help but they are pricey.
An external USB 3.0 1 TB external can be had very cheap lately ($70 or less) so it is easy to try out and maybe even get another for a backup solution.
Hope that helps.

When I had an Air I had two 1TB external drives where I stored photos, music, movies, etc. It's pretty easy with iTunes and all to just store everything on an external and keep your main ssd clean.
Now that I have the surface pro 3 I wish this thing had one more usb port. I can't find a good USB hub that will, I guess, power an external hard drive and a phone.

External drives are pretty simple and easy to use, so I don't think you would have any trouble with it once shown how.
Cloud storage might be another option worth looking into as well. Good luck

Get Amazon Prime and store all your photos on there. Free unlimited photo storage with Prime.
Just get an external for everything else.

if you got the 13" then it has an SD card slot. you can get a pretty large SD card that will hold a ton of pictures and won't have to carry around a bulky external hard drive for your extra storage.
