All UVA fraternities suspended until next semester

The University of Virginia on Saturday suspended all fraternities and related activities in the wake of a shocking report in Rolling Stone about an alleged 2012 sexual assault involving seven men, and the peer pressure that followed urging the victim not to report it.
University president Teresa A. Sullivan described the alleged gang rape laid out in the article as “appalling” and said in an statement posted to the university’s web site Saturday that the school has since asked the Charlottesville police department to investigate the alleged assault. There have been no arrests in the case.
"I write you today in solidarity. I write you in great sorrow, great rage, but most importantly, with great determination," Sullivan said in the statement. "Meaningful change is necessary, and we can lead that change for all universities. We can demand that incidents like those described in Rolling Stone never happen and that if they do, the responsible are held accountable to the law."

There was a time when I'd be shocked by reading something like this, but then the Duke lacrosse thingy happened.

Meaning you immediately assume the women are lying?

Right, so overreaction and punishing the innocent too is the way to go?

If you read the Rolling Stone expose you'll see it lays out the case for institutional neglect (and sometimes outright support) of a disgusting culture of rape. I have no problem whatsoever with them stopping everything in its tracks and doing an audit of the system.
The school is already one of just a handful nationwide that is under a compliance review by the DoE's Civil Rights arm.

"she’s gonna be the girl who cried rape, and we’ll never be allowed into any frat party again,"
So her own friends didn't even believe her?

It doesn't appear they are stopping everything. It appears to be a desperate overreaction by the school president to take the heat off of her.

They believed her but didn't want to rock the boat.

Weird. In the OT thread, a UVA student describes the suspension as not that big a deal.

No. I mean I reserve judgement.
You do remember the Duke lacrosse scandal, don't you? The rich white kids proved they were innocent. Poorer white guys would have been sacrificed. The Duke professors clamoring for their hides have never apologized. That's what I meant.

Absurd, absolutely absurd. There should be a ton of greek money at UVA though, so hopefully they can pressure the right places.

Yes, let's hope they can sweep everything under the rug and get right back to the disgusting status quo.

You mean the status quo where the huge majority of fraternities don't do this, if there even is a "this?"
I'm sorry someone picked on you and you want everyone punished for it.

So you're saying it's purely symbolic?

No big deal, I mean, a bunch of PROFESSORS at a school these kids paid to go to called them monsters in public, but they silently faded away when it was learned that the whole thing was a fib. No problem though, because we have to come out with a forceful display before we learn the truth so the SJWs can sleep easy about their own spinelessness.

If UVA's greek life bosses are anything like LSU's then they are spineless twits and need to freak themselves. This a huge overreaction.

Always include the innocent in any roundup of wrongdoers. It can all be sorted out later to some degree or another. Its an absurd overreaction.

Rolling stone has proven itself to be a very poorly writen outlet on serious topics. I don't trust their perspective.
However I don't know enough about the case to make any judgement

They are stopping everything for like a month. Not that big of a deal.

It still makes no sense. I know it's brief, but stopping all fraternity activities for allegations against one entity? It's beyond ridiculous.
