If you dropped Danny Woodhead into 50's/60's NFL, how good would he have been?

IMO he'd have been a Hall of Famer

Why? He would have never gotten a clean release off the line, and would have been killed.

If you dropped any NFL player into that era, would they not be unbelievable?

Well yeah but I just look at Woodhead as such a great football player whose only flaw is his size

Probably. Almost any Pro today would be.

No kidding. They were smaller, weaker and slower, which helps Woodhead, not hurt.

Great thread. Really thought-provoking. Let's think of some other players and explore this further.

HA! No. If you just all of a sudden dropped an athlete from today to the 50's and 60's they probably wouldn't last a whole game.

ETA: Go ahead and look at the height and weight of the 1950 NFL pro bowlers.

Guts like wood head and sproles would have a tougher time back then IMO.
The running schemes were nearly exclusively man blocking power schemes, not zone, and more straight line runners thrive in that.
I think the smaller shiftier back is a productive of the times for the most part

Yeah. JJ Watt would really struggle.

I just assumed his best shot would be at WR. I don't think he would have made it as a RB back in those years. Maybe I'm crazy.

ETA: Pete Pihos was the starting DE in the 1950 pro bowl. He was 6'1" 210 lbs. He would injure the shite out of a modern day LT

If Woodhead can succeed in today's NFL, I'd be willing to bet a shitload of money that he would have done just fine in the 1950s and 1960s. He probably would have been a perennial pro bowler.
I'm more curious as to why you think he would have gotten killed.

He could have put up Hugh McElhenny or Lenny Moore type stats if he could have stayed healthy. That would have earned him HOF recognition.

Woodheads value is more of a passing down guy (routes, blocking). Teams three a lot less then and even less to RBs. He is not a between the tackles kind of guy. He would be good but don't think a HOFer
