I agree with Thomas Jefferson when he said immigration is "a right which nature has given to all men, of departing from the country in which chance, not choice, has placed them." and that America should be open those people.
I also agree with Thomas Paine that the United States should be "the asylum for the persecuted lovers of civil and religious liberty."
Haha- seems like you just read some Wikipedia entries. I sense such deep-seated conviction in your "I agree" statements. You truly sound like a man of principle and deep thought.

All these people who came to America in our parents / grandparents / great-grandparents era didn't expect shite when they got here.
Now we have these assholes who expect us to just give them free shite when they get here.
The EXPECT it because our leaders allow this shite to happen.

You can have lax imigration rules when there is no welfare state.
If you come and don't work, you don't eat.
Why are you so worried about the illegals going on welfare? They came here because they had enough initiative to overcome all of the risks that you don't associate with welfare recipients. They are hard working people for the most part who have displaced American workers in jobs that are at the bottom of the barrel. I'd be more concerned about the lazy American than the venturous, risk-taking, illegal immigrant.
I welcome all who are not deterred by hard work and lower wages than their American counterparts.

If I'm being perfectly honest, neither deserve welfare.
Then again, I don't believe the majority of people on welfare don't deserve it.
The biggest problem I have is they didn't come here legally.
I have two very good friends from England and Columbia who are PISSED that they had to pay the money they did to come here and work.
Obama basically pissed on every immigrant who came here legally and paid the price to do so.

Fine, open up the immigration process with the caveat that no immigrants will ever receive one taxpayer provided benefit. No public education, no free healthcare, no housing assistance, nada

A. Welfare for Americans should be curtailed.
B. Welfare should be reserved for citizens only.

So you believe all immigrants should be required to learn English?
My Cajun ancestors came here from Nova Scotia. They did not speak English. But that was before La. was part of the U.S. so the laws didn't apply to them.
My Cajun grandmother married my Spanish grandfather. She spoke 90% French and 10% English. He spoke 90% Spanish and 10% English. So, they could only communicate in English.
They raised my mom to speak French and English but absolutely no Spanish was allowed. Why? Because grandma was a bitch.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Central Americans that risk their lives are not expecting to mooch off the state. Their idea is to get to the US, get a job in order to send money back to their families in Central America. Most of them have no idea about welfare programs nor how to use them, its ridiculous to think that is what they are hoping for.
Just to be clear, they want money to send back to their wives, kids, family etc. Just look at the numbers in economies like Honduras, El Salvador, a big part is "divisas" or money sent from the US by immigrants.
Now I agree that welfare should not be given to arriving immigrants, let them prove they are productive before anything is given for free.

What "shadows" are you referring to? When you repeat that tired line, I suspect you have been spoon fed your beliefs.
The only shadows they are in are those produced by the crepe myrtles planted in front of Home Depot in Metairie.

10 year old children can't get jobs in the US. They are anchor babies. Mom and Dad will come later and vote Democrat for the rest of their lives.

Some want to work but it's naive to think that once they learn of welfare, many won't opt for that route. How many first generation immigrants are on assistance now?

Dodged that question like a true democrat. I'm curious of your stance on this.
Sorry.
I know that was a non-answer, but the question seems unrelated to me.
I don't believe an inability to speak English should be a barrier to immigrating to America, however, I don't believe private businesses or any state should be forced to provide services in different languages.

I will 100% admit that the reason I know those quotes are because of the raised interest in immigration this week. Felt like it was time to get versed in the subject.

Agree on that completely. Welfare is something that has to be talked about too, just as immigration reform.

A contradictory statement, as children who can't speak English are taught reading, writing and 'rithmetic... in Espanol. Often way up into high school.

Have we gotten out in front of our skis on the welfare deal? Here is what Obama said last night.
quote:
Now let’s be clear about what it isn’t. This deal does not apply to anyone who has come to this country recently. It does not apply to anyone who might come to America illegally in the future. It does not grant citizenship or the right to stay here permanently, or offer the same benefits that citizens receive. Only Congress can do that. All we’re saying is we’re not going to deport you.
I know some of the critics of the action call it amnesty. Well, it’s the not. Amnesty is the immigration system we have today. Millions of people who live here without paying their taxes or playing by the rules, while politicians use the issue to scare people and whip up votes at election time. That’s the real amnesty, leaving this broken system the way it is. Mass amnesty would be unfair. Mass deportation would be both impossible and contrary it to our character.

A work permit = amnesty.
A work permit (in many cases) = drivers license.
A drivers license (in many cases) = voter and welfare registration

"Most of them have no idea about welfare programs.." Do you not understand that there are immigration activists in all the immigration hot spots who are doing just that? There are classes explaining just how to get this or that Fed/state benefit. You are wayyy wrong on that claim. They know fairly soon how to use the system. Who do you think filed the first law suits against the State of La. for not having enough bi lingual teaches in its school systems, forcing financially strapped school systems to spend even more money. A clue: Not the families back home.
