re: The reason Toyota is tops of all vehicle manufacturers

They're all in on the spindle look, no doubt. Maybe it will grow on me. As a member of #TeamLexus - I'm more concerned about mechanical properties of the car and ride comfort. I don't want the appearance to be hideous, of course, but that is largely subjective.
Mechanically I think bad cars are rare these days from all manufacturers.
The LS sedan and GX SUV were both ruined by that spindle grill update. Those were my two favorite Toyota products. Perhaps Toyota just doesn't do cutting edge styling well, or maybe they shouldn't take a conservative design and slap an edgy grill on the front and clear lens tail lights and expect it to be cohesive or attractive. I think that's why the 2013 Camry was just so unappealing to me. The Honda Accord was a more cohesive design.
I think right now, Audi has the most cohesive luxury car lineup. They look aggressive and pretty without being overdone like Infiniti.
I also like the designs of the Cadillac sedans, but that's a little more radical for my taste. They look better in lighter colors that sort of tone down their look. I hate the Escalade.
I think Buck has a good styling direction, but they don't do overly contemporary stuff. Lincoln's new crossovers are cool looking as well.
I think Ford did well with the Fusion and Chevy did well with the new Impala....but those are exceptions and should be used as a benchmark for future design originality for cars in their class. Most mainstream cars are very bland. The Camry and Corolla are some of the worst offenders. It doesn't help that the most popular colors appear to be white and tan.

They make the most well made, and reliable vehicle of all manufacturers period.

I agree....and I'm very interested in their new 2.8 liter Duramax I-4. Mid sized trucks will get more popular as full sized trucks become much more expensive, with the new technology and materials designed to meet CAFE regs. Washington seems at war with pickup trucks at the moment. I think GM made the right move bringing them to market now. The V6 gas model I test drove was shockingly comfortable, smooth, and quiet.
I think this will trigger Toyota's move to bring a new Tacoma design soon.
Nissan is also bringing the updated Navara here as the Frontier. Very cool looking truck and I think this will bring a lot of new customers to Nissan.
Ford may eventually bring a true compact pickup to the market, but it will probably be 4-5 years from now. I'm not sure if small trucks will be as popular as mid sized models.

So, a truck that GM got rid of for poor performance and is coming back as a new vehicle "blows Toyota out of the water".
How do you arrive at that?

Have an old 97 extended cab 4x4 with 200k miles. I have to fight off the people who offer to buy the damn thing wherever I go.

Subaru is pretty solid. Their interiors are not so plush but they are tough as hell as well.

I have an '89 4x4 with less than 150,000 miles on it and I have the same experience. I was offered what I paid for it after driving it for 4 years and putting 50,000 miles on it.

Being a market leader doesn't mean it's a good design. GM and Toyota are both massive and a lot of their designs are bland as hell. The Corolla and Cruze are particularly blah and both are top sellers worldwide. The Camry is bland as hell, as is the Chevy Traverse (top selling large crossover).
Being a consistent market leader is absolutely an indicator of a successful design. Appealing to your personal sense of style is absolutely not.

Seen the recent ones? They made SERIOUS upgrades. They are pretty luxurious vehicles on the interior now.

boring.. maybe.
But what's your truck worth after seven years?
Mine still has a KBB value of higher than what I paid for it on Ebay years ago.

I had a 2002 Taco - paid $18k for it in 2004 - with ~ 175k miles on it when it was totaled 6 1/2 years later (damned kids), insurance company cut me a check for $10k.
Ram, Chevy, and to a lesser extent Ford, can EABOD compared to that holding of value. I'd be lucky to get 40, 45 percent over that length of time and over 100k miles of driving.

This seriously means nothing. Local auctions, local black books, not websites are where you find what your vehicle is really worth.
I'm glad you love your truck. But I really believe Toyotas are about the most overpriced truck on the market. They are gas hogs and have interiors from the 90's.

Correct. KBB is the worst tool to try and see what your vehicle is worth. They will tell you its worth 11k....but when you choose the option for Auto Trader (partnered with KBB) to BUY it...they'll offer 8.5k. Magical.
Posted on 11/20/14 at 12:34 pm to Napoleon
KBB is worthless. Makes car owners feel good, but that's it.
