Phrasing is going to get you on this one. There is a mighty big difference between a pen raised deer and going to Kentucky or Ohio for a fairchase shot at something you don't grow.

Number 1 rule of hunting for big deer, you have to have big deer to kill big deer. Some of these places your average deer is trophy class here. Plus it's fun.

I agree smoked hog. Should have worded it diff. I'm all for packing it up and headed to BIG deer country. I simply meant choosing your animal in an enclosed area and killing it.

No doubt, and just getting away from work, and going on a "trip" is fun. I usually go somewhere, every year. Hell, its something to drive your soul, all year. This year, I've Got A Kansas tag, and I've already got a trip to Canada lined up for next year. I can't kill deer here, that will compare to those places, with the land/opportunities I have at home. Now, I've killed a mid 130's inch deer with my Bow, at home this year, and that's a top-end deer for our area, and I'm just as happy with it as I would be with a 160+ in KS...Everyone has to make their own goals, and satisfaction is in the eye of beholder. It used to anger me that a few local lawyers go pay 20 grand and kill 200+ pen deer every year, and say how tough the hunting was in their 3,000 acre pen, but as I age, it really doesn't bother me. Life is so short, just enjoy it all, and every opportunity to be outdoors..

I don't see how some people can justify high fence hunting being as hard as taking a trophy buck on public land. I'm with JJ. How can you go into a huge box stand the first day and lay down a 200+" that you picked out and call that hunting. If hunting in a fenced area is difficult then you may want to find a new hobby. You might as well just go buy a $20K deer mount from a taxidermist and brag about it. Different strokes for different folks, but i'd rather put in the time/work than the large some of money.

I don't see how anyone can claim too much on this either. You pretty much luck up on public land. Yes it's much more difficult to get the oppurtunity compared to a high fence. But it's not like you get to spend the time with deer management practices or anything. You just shoot what happens to come along. I guess there's some scouting involved, but don't underestimate how much scouting goes on in those high fence places to know where deer are, both cull deer and trophies.

I hunt a high fence place and are there bigger deer there? Sure, but it is not like they are running everywhere and you can just take your "pick" and shoot. They are still wild animals and hard as hell to kill. Right now we are hardly seeing any "trophies" because the acorn crop is so abundant. I am not apologetic one bit because I hunt behind a fence. If the place is big enough it doesn't matter anyway.

you absolutely are, otherwise you wouldn't have posted anything

my dad works year-round on his high fenced place. He never stops feeding, never stops checking fences, trapping coyotes, fixing stands, mowing, etc. He is pretty proud of his property and the deer there, and rightfully so.

The good news is that you won't have to ever worry about spending your money on one of these hunts. I would venture to guess that if you were invited to hunt one of these places you damn sure wouldn't turn it down.

I disagree with killing spikes and yearlings. But you know, they aren't killed on or even near my place, so if someone wants to post pics of them and is proud of their kill, good for them.

I've been less banned lately, so that's nice

I'm not even invited to hunt there. He tells me about deer and to bring my wife there so she can shoot them
