I like falcon rods a lot too.
I wouldn't call Shimano middle of the mall crap. You can spend little to nothing and get a bliser pack pos or you can spend a lot and get a really nice reel. Same with Penn. I'm not sure how the Penn spinning reel casts a longer distance than a Shimano, the reel has very little to do with it.

You're right, I may have overreacted a bit. Shimano is great quality stuff, I just give the slight edge to the Penn so far.

I have falcon coastals and castaways on my curados and calcutta. I just wasn't sure if there was a preference when it came to spinning rods.
Reel wise I don't have a clue with brand though. It's not going to be for big bull reds or anything. Just trout and marsh reds...
